OIC Summit In Pakistan - PM Imran Khan speech in OIC Summit - 22 Mar 2022

.
@Joe Shearer - I think subcontinent leadership in general cannot figure out a balance between a pre written speech and a political rally rambling.

You can’t read off a paper because otherwise its best to just publish it and you can’t ad-lib it like Imran Khan does all the time.

<sigh>

Watching my clowns speak, other than at political rallies, where they use the huge intake of breath, and the breathing out of mawkish emotion, and precious little else, is torture, especially looking back at speeches made by old-timers - I won't name them as the pack will come in for the kill immediately.

The secret, after 35 years of coping with these issues, seems to be to understand that the audience is there to be informed and to be spoken to, but not to be harangued. Where we took our cues from our old debating days was to discuss the subject thoroughly, get our fundamentals down into a few points on cue cards, and add, during the interaction, any interesting points that others might make, supportive or contradictory. It gets so that one can treat the main subject as a framework, and decorate it, austerely, with additional material that is generated during the discussion.

Unfortunately, it is a very rare pol. who has had the opportunity of going through this.

Shashi Baba is one of those; he was our great enemy, from Delhi, and the effects are visible even today, as he talks about his main subject, and works in what else has been mentioned that is of interest, again, both positive and negative.

One is so tempted to ask that elected representatives undergo Speaking In Parliament 101, but then the objection immediately is visible - what about Manners 101? Knowledge of the Subject of Debate/Discussion 101? not to forget Common Sense about what is good for the Country and the People 101.

What you have identified, Sir-jee, is going to be here and it will stay. Nobody can teach the unteachable, nobody can change the moronic.

I am referring to Indians in every case; it is a personal policy not to comment on our neighbours. It may fit the situation rather closely on both sides of the Radcliffe Line, but there we are, these are the things we cannot shed quickly.

I am at loss to understand the goal Pakistan is trying to aim at. Generally people prefer actionable items but in Pakistanis case it’s lecturing. The goal is to just make statements and do nothing. Calling representative of OCI and telling them what is right or wrong is one thing. Having the ability to influence them to change their behavior is another.

No matter how much you praise the speech. Speech does not deliver results it’s diplomacy that does. You cannot say nice speech with no outcome. What is the worth of that speech that does not get anyone to change its stand.

The peril of democracy is janab that it only produces leadership that represents the average of its constituents.

Jaswant Singh.. another balanced speaker comes to mind. But then, the general malaise that has set in with human attention span and quest for knowledge is prevailing all over. Blame social media for keeping the subcontinent a group of uncouth and generally ignorant emotional sheep.

If it is about to help the dire situation in Afghanistan and Somalia, I believe it is already the interest of all Muslim nations. With huge net profit posted by Aramco and I believe other state owned oil and gas companies in Gulf region, significant amount of money to help both Afghanistan and Somalia will likely to happen.

Indonesia has started sending aids to Afghanistan with its own initiative, Pakistan I believe has also done similar thing

Good things are never easy my friends, only bad things are. 😉

For a few moments, I thought you might say, in a democracy, leaders represent the lowest common denominator.

Jaswant was, perhaps, different. Although he was BJP, he was not RSS. He was, above all, an officer and a gentleman.

In PakTeaHouse, we had a kind of seminar on Jinnah, and came to certain broad conclusions after about a month of intense debate. To our utter surprise, and pleasure, less than a year later, Jaswant Singh's book, closely echoing those conclusions, came out.

He was different.

The only bit that I felt was a blot on his record was his flying into Kandahar to deal with the hijackers. Perhaps there was no alternative.:fie:
