The Indian Air Force (IAF) is unimpressed by China's Chengdu J-20 "stealth" fighter jet, echoing a growing opinion the J-20 isn't a true stealth jet in the same mold as the Lockheed F-35 Lightning II.

It also points out its new Dassault Rafale multi-role fighters also have stealth capabilities that remain secret but are present in this French-made jet. India has ordered 36 Rafales from the plane's maker, Dassault Aviation.

IAF realizes full well the importance of acquiring a fighter aircraft with stealth features and that's why the Rafale, which has "special stealth features," was acquired from France, said Air Marshal SB Deo, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Air Command (WAC).

WAC is the largest and most important Air Command of the IAF. It consists of 16 Air Force Bases (AFBs), and is responsible for aerial defense of North India. It controls 21 squadrons, of which 13 are jet fighter squadrons.

The Air Marshal believes the J-20, which was had its first public reveal at the Zhuhai Air Show last Nov. 1, is no cause for concern since Rafael also has stealth features.

"The radial cross section of the aircraft (Rafale) is significantly smaller for an aircraft of that size," he said.

"There are many other features too which I would not like to disclose at this stage."

Air Marshal Deo pointed out the J-20 has stealth features only at the front and not in the rear. This means the J-20 is not a true stealth fighter in the same class as the F-35.

"It is important to maintain stealth while using your radar equipment, while opening your bomb bay doors to fire and ensuring how a weapon can quickly come out of the rails and go out. I do not know how far this aircraft is stealth," he said.

He also said it will be some time before the J-20 is operationally fielded but the IAF is prepared for its arrival.

China is still years behind west and even Russia (it had to buy SU35) when it comes to aeronautics, engines, stealth technology etc. As J-20 will be highly classified it will be difficult to gauge it's ability but it will be no F22 or F35 or even FGFA who knows even Rafale would turn out to be superior. Let J20 hit production and details trickle in until then it's just my guess is better than yours

Apparently, being selected by the IAF bestows upon a fighter aircraft the fantastical ability to match and excel any other combat jet on the planet.

Perhaps aeronautical companies should pay the IAF to temporarily "induct" their products so that they can automatically become the best in the world.

Translation: "We know nothing of the Rafale, nothing of the J-20, nothing of the T-50/FGFA, and nothing of the F-22, but what the heck; let's throw some meaningless comparisons just for the sake of it."

Well we know the technological prowess of West/Russia/China. You have to buy a flanker from Russia and you will make a jet better than F-22? That can happen only in Pakistani and Chinese fan-boy dreams not in real world

Uh, no; we don't. We can at best "guesstimate" what each of those nations/regions are adept at, and from various indicators make an estimate as to their relative progress in the field, but there is no "magical formula" by which we can holistically judge "technological prowess" as an unitary notion.

Buying a Flanker (24, to be accurate) can implicate a lot of things, which does not necessarily suggest that the Su-35 is in any way "superior" to any current or future Chinese aircraft. In fact, some of the details of the purchase point to the theory that the Su-35 deal was not undertaken due to a technological/capability deficiency.

But it has hit production...I mean it's in the same phase as F-35. LRIP... Are we on the same forum.

Whether or not it's better isn't that relevant. The relevant question is are the Russian and American jets that much better that at a fraction of the numbers they can still control the sky.

People will believe whatever they want. France decided to go for German rifles. I can draw the conclusion any nation incapable of a rifle is incapable of a jet. That would be the wrong assumption.

However, since China isn't France and doesn't have the proven track record. I could see how this is a different situation. Though that doesn't mean it is right. It just means China needs another decade or two be be given the benefit of the doubt. A compliment really, when we think about the start of 4th gen fighters compare to now.

It's not 'guesstimate' US makes the best engines, best radars, best EW suits but still China will make the best plane? Real world doesn't work that way. US is still around a decade ahead of others when it comes to cutting-edge technology. I will give you the rest of world is catching up but they are still not there. The amount and quality of technology a F-22 may pack is phenomenal

Its about 15 years the rafale was inducted....and its about two years remaining to J-20 to be inducted....How you think other countries just as stupid that they dont know anything....!!

Unless you have technical parameters and/or performance data to back your assertions up, they are "guesstimates" at best, regardless of whether they are grounded in actuality or not.

The term "technology" refers to a huge facet of society & engineering that is itself diverse enough that warrants it to be treated as its own faculty rather than a single idea. There is merely no way to gauge "technological prowess" as a single entity because each nation/company/researcher/institution operate in their own niches (aka "specializations", if you will).

Why are we talking about the F-22 when the article at hand speaks of a completely divergent subject?

why you are considering SU-35..??
J-20 is a mouth shutter......For su-35 China has J-10C/D...you might not aware of its capabilities....China has bought SU-35 just for the variety of aircrafts....They want to counter A with A Not with B...You know what i mean.

Do you think they are still flying the Rafael which they did 15 years ago? Is Toyota still selling the corolla it was selling in 1966? What we know is 'today' Rafael is one of the best proved/battle hardened 4.5 generation fighters and J-20 will be a 5 generation fighter with 'not so sure' capabilities

Well 9 ladies cannot give birth to a child in 1 month. The west have been doing R&D for years pumping in billions of dollars to maintain their supremacy and the results are there for all to see. Given China has done reverse engineering and has cut the learning curve but reverse engineering can help only so much. China still has to buy engines from Russia doesn't that speak volumes about technological prowess of these countries?

Bro, that is a good excuse to sail your boat for few more metres... Su-35 didn't add anything significant in Chinese arsenal, that deal waa entirely political..

If Su-35 is such a non-significant entity for China when compared to their flankers then why is Pakistan dying to buy Su-35 and not the Chinese version of Su-35?

Chinese aren't allowed to export those variants because of copy rights violation which were expressed by Russia...
