That is expecting too much when the Army itself is obsessed with foreign maal for fat commission cheques. Look at how Navy participates and encourages indigenous products while Army and IAF only want foreign junk (the best quality is never sold to us).

There are elements like that but we can't paint everyone with same brush.

One think you have to accept is that there are obstacles in infrastructure (we have good shipyards both public/private but we don't have good aerospace companies) then there is issue of investments too.

But, a interesting and a very dangerous aspect is that of a foreign hand.

You will see anonymous latter, news stories, leaks etc. in case of MMRCA, Artillery etc. but they are not there in case of Navy. Because I think they take IAF and IA more threat to them.

Tsh, OFB and DRDO do not consistently produce world class equipment. In fact, the vast majority of the goods they produce are outdated and overpriced. I dont mean to be a killjoy, that is the reality. Maybe after the OFB and DRDO are completely overhauled, re-staffed, and rebuilt with new manufacturing capabiltiy they will be closer to world class.

The clearest example I have seen is in small arms. I tried using several OFB produced small arms (9mm, Insas) and the craftsmanship was absoloutely nowhere near that of Western companies such as H&K, FN, or Norinco of China.

If you do not believe me buy an OFB 9mm and then buy a 9mm Glock, or even a Norinco 9mm, and take them to a range and then tell me OFB is world class. Then do the same with an Insas and a HK G36, FN 2000, or IMI Tavor.

When it comes to artillery, countries such as Sweden (Bofors) South Africa (Denel), etc. have long
histories of designing and exporting internationally competitive artillery systems. What artillery systems has DRDO developed and sold internationally?


Not wanting our soldiers to use second rate equipment that happens to be made in India does not make me any less patriotic than you, it just means I don't think OFB and DRDO have any excuses for getting Indian military personnel killed because they cannot depend on "indigenously" designed and/or manufactured equipment.
