Having good relations with all countries is optimal.
The reality is that the US are trying to get that very footing in India. The Cold War ended over 20 years ago. And things changed ever since, especially after 9/11.
Otherwise, they would not have sold you those P-8Is or tried to sell F-16s or F-18s. American equipment nearly always have certain strings attached. Surprising considering India used to be Cold War foe.
Senior American politicians regardless of party are scared $hit of China. Sure, they would never imply this directly, but that is done just to look good. They are afraid and paranoid of The Dragon.
They'll use every lance they can possibly get against China. And usually, they try to wage wars through proxies, never directly. India is a big country, and a vast one at that. It is a feasible proxy for the US against China.
Sure, India and the US are not currently allies, but they do hold interests of strategic value - especially with regards to China. And besides China doesn't necessarily see India as an enemy, but just cautious.
India is a member of BRICS after all, and an observer state of The Shanghai Cooperation Council (SCO), along with Pakistan. I hope those two expand and strengthen and that my country gets a piece of that.
But the US is trying and trying hard to bring India on its side against China. It is all about the broad picture in perspective of the US.
A Sino-Indo War is Uncle Sam's wet dream. I hope that never happens.
