Obama supports India on UN Security Council ​

NEW DELHI — President Barack Obama backed India for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council Monday, a dramatic diplomatic gesture to his hosts as he wrapped up his first visit to this burgeoning nation.

Obama was making the announcement in a speech to India's parliament on the third and final day of his visit. In doing so, he fulfilled what was perhaps India's dearest wish for Obama's trip here. India has been pushing for permanent Security Council membership for years.

NEW DELHI (AP) — President Barack Obama has come out in support of India for permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council.

It's an important gesture to Obama's Indian hosts on his first visit, and a sign of the value the U.S. places on strengthening its relationship with India.

The president told India's parliament that he looked forward to "a reformed U.N. Security Council that includes India as a permanent member."

Getting a U.S. endorsement for membership was considered to be at or near the top of India's wish list for the president's visit. But officials stressed that he's supporting the move only in the context of larger Security Council reforms, which could take years.

OK, I'm floored - That's still a huge statement and made in the parliament before the world, it has the weight of a national undertaking -- maybe on the level of the undertaking in Ankara and Cairo

All know it is a r a t race to get into the UNSC, we should not give concessions for a chair there.

If we powerful enough, we can get the things done there by others, no need a seat.

Hmm...Im a little afraid of what India will have to do for the next 2-3 yrs to get the seat (in return for this endorsement)...I hope its not troops in Aghanistan or refueling for Iran war

yup I agree
nothing comes for free. there is always a catch there. war on terror aside I think US wants India to more "actively" take on China in all possible ways (maybe short of open military conflict)

re Pakistan, if the Kashmir disputre is resolved that is in the interest of the people of Kashmir then I dont think Pakistan would have much force in its agrument against Indian permanent seat.

by the way I really woner if this whle security council fiasco is just ornamental. it suddenly becomes "irrelevent" to the powers to be and while the writing has not dried the same powers want to expand it and use its "sacred" legislations against the countries like Iran, Iraq and North Korea.

If UNSC keeps on adopting unfair policies and targets nations without strong representation then it will loose all respect and its powers will fade. UN works by consensus and if it bullies and screws around with others then consensus will no longer remain. From there it goes on to become another coalition of the willing and UNSC will be rendered meaningless.

Fact is that India is the largest democracy in both SW and SE Asia, short of Japan...whose democracy model was designed by a benevolent USA after we won WW II. General McArthur gets much of the credit for crafting what is now a long standing free and democratic Japan out of the terror the old Japan wrought on the world, in particular on the old Indian Raj.

Pakistan, in my view, has become epitomized by the radical Muslims infesting primarily Northern areas of that nation. However, dislocated or relocated to find and have jobs to make a living Pashtuns in Sind Province, in particular, keep the waters muddied so that the world at large sees a seething with terrorism Pakistan. A little oil spreads out a great deal on top of water, as wel all know.

he wants India not just to look east but to engage east

he also said India must interfere in Myanmar for democracy... he suggested it would not be interference in sovereignty of Myanmar(India supported leadership in mayanmar till yet and is a close friend of myanmar)

He said US wants india to behave like a global leader, as a friend of US

He wants indian support on Iran issue

He wants greater Indian role in Afganistan

It's all in black and white what's the price....

Like I said many times before, India should concentrate on domestic HOMOGENEOUS development and other critical and most priority domestic issues rather then trying to join this stupid global policing bandwagon. Our relationship with almost all the countries is in it's best at the moment (courtesy our non-allignment policy and our trade) and it'll only continue to improve in the near future, with or without UNSC permament seat.

India's Myanmar policy also need not be changed as we donot want another hostile neighbor on our eastern front. We have to look east but with a view to improve our relationship. With china, with all south-eastern asian, with Japan. Not the way US want's us to act.

We should keep our relationship with US strictly professional. We pay, you sell; You pay, we sell!! That's it. No need to go out of the way to please uncle SAM. They are terrible as friend but immensely useful in a professional relationship.

I believe that India do deserve to be a permanent member of the UNSC despite being our adversary.

I know it is a very bitter truth to swallow but India is making rapid strides in economy, diplomacy and other walks of life.

We, on the other hand are still neck deep in old crap.
All day long we are keep comparing weapons and armies of both countries but fail to realize that:

In the 21st century, economics and diplomacy are the only ways to earn respect and recognition in the global village.

Displays of military adventurism caused by high levels of testosterone would not bring respect.

10 billion dollars,54000 jobs and much more to come.

The US pretty much knows that India cant be bullied into sending trrops or suppporting a war with Iran.
