BBC News - Obama hails 'new chapter' in US-Cuba ties

US President Barack Obama has hailed a "new chapter" in US relations with Cuba, announcing moves to normalise diplomatic and economic ties.

Mr Obama said Washington's current approach was "outdated" and the changes were the "most significant" in US policy towards Cuba in 50 years.

Cuban President Raul Castro said he welcomed the shift in a TV address.

The move includes the release of US contractor Alan Gross and three Cubans held in the US.

Wednesday's announcements follow more than a year of secret talks in Canada and at the Vatican, directly involving Pope Francis.

Republican criticism
The US is looking to open an embassy in Havana in the coming months, Mr Obama said.

Raul Castro: "We have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations"

The plans set out in a White House statement also include:

  • Reviewing the designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism
  • Easing a travel ban for US citizens
  • Easing financial restrictions
  • Increasing telecommunications links
  • Efforts to lift the 54-year-old trade embargo
Mr Castro said the changes were something Cuba had been pressing for for a long time.

"Ever since my election... I have reiterated on many occasions our preparedness to hold a respectful dialogue with the government of the United States based on sovereign equality," he said.

Does anyone think this has to do with Russia/US Cold War 2.0?

Probably has some part to play...

This is a strategic move..basically giving Cuba something to think about before hosting Russian missile silos (if ever again)..
In the past, Cuba could pull any stunt in isolation as it had nothing to lose...now it has everything to gain and everything to lose depending on their actions from here on...

Interesting....

I wonder how long this process will take. Because simply 'easing' and 'considering' doesn't sound too great.

Not surprised you chose Cuba. It is also destination for US high school seniors. I knew many people who went there for few days. For drug use obviously. And some other things went down between girls and boys. :P

Actually I'm not sure Americans are allowed into Cuba...Its tricky with the passport stamps and everything..
Plus you have to fly via Canada which makes it even more of a pain in Uranus!

But yes...everything else you state is on point Sire!

Im Indian but a parmanent resident of the US.
I'm sure Cuba has some loopholes in their system to cater to tourists...
Kinda like Israel, where you can choose to get the stamp on your passport or attached as a copy....A lot of my friends have to fly to Israel and Arab countries for work and thats the only way to balance it out apparently...
Cuba could have similar protocols....

Well one thing is for certain, I can finally smoke some Cohiba's without consequences...fingers X'd!!!

I have always advocated the US take over Cuba when the Soviet Union collapsed.

By 'take over', I do not mean militarily even though Miami-Dade County PD instead of the US military can do the job, but that the US should have removed Cuba from the list of hostile countries. Let capitalism take over Cuba. We should NOT have listened to the Cuban community in Florida, although I do respect them and their views on Castro. Let US tourists and businesses spend their monies. Without the Soviet Union, the Castro brothers can only run Cuba for so long before the Cubans realize the kind of better life they could have with US and overthrow the Castros. Instead, by continuing to isolate Cuba, we enable the Castros to continue to oppress the Cubans for the last 20-so yrs.

It might take a bit longer now for the Castros and remnants of their kind to go away but it is practically inevitable now that Cuba will become an unofficial US state.

51st - Puerto Rico
52nd - Canada
53rd - Mexico
54th - Cuba

Viva America...:usflag:
