Obama, advisors discuss progress in US-Pak talks

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama received an update on Afghanistan and Pakistan at a White House monthly meeting, which also discussed progress made at the U.S.-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue in working with Islamabad in regard with the fight against violent extremists and regional stability.
The meeting concluded with a discussion of the progress made at the recent U.S.-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue in working with Pakistan to root out violent extremists and support regional stability, the White House said after President Obamas top advisors in the National Security team briefed him about ongoing American efforts in the region.
The U.S. leader received an update on our progress in disrupting, dismantling, and defeating al Qaeda in the region, said a statement released by the White House Press Secretary.
Obama then focused on preparations for the NATO Lisbon Summit as it related to Afghanistan and ISAF issues to include recent commitments of additional trainers for Afghan National Security Forces, beginning transition of security responsibility to Afghan lead, and developing U.S. long-term partnership with Afghanistan, the statement added.
The meeting was attended by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Defence Secretary Robert Gates, Chief of Staff Pete Rouse, National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Leon Panetta and senior officials.
