NYT writer is absolutely right: Delhi is literally a shithole; but so is all of India

Having visited India in 2015, it seems to be a country of contradictions. Delhi is no doubt highly polluted but then again from my personal experience, so is London and California and Shanghai. I am no expert on pollution levels so I cannot state which is more polluted. Mumbai downtown and generally is shoddily maintained. The one thing which I cannot understand about third world countries such as India and China is their refusal to maintain high rise buildings which are built as residences for the poor and lower income masses. It is one thing to build huge towers to house people but surely there should be fore planning for the painting and maintaining of those projects ? Apart from that, India generally has progressed from a comparison of what it was in the 1990s (according to the internet)to the time when I visited in 2015. The problem remains with disparate wealth where extremely wealthy people exist amongst extremely poor people in masses. Hopefully the current government's attempts to do away with money laundering and tax evasion will make the rupee trickle down to the masses
You haven't seen the open shitting yet? I trust you haven't been to the real Delhi

I have been to Delhi and I suspect that you haven't. You're of Chinese origin and I must say that I have also been to Shanghai. Both cities are very similar on a town planner's note. There wasn't any open shitting in Delhi which I observed. In fact policing in Delhi is more strict than in most other Indian states. New Delhi being the capital is as cosmopolitan as Shanghai. On a factual note though, and this may sound funny since you raised the question, I did notice an old man openly defecating in Shanghai but in all fairness to the city, a bunch of police officers were assembled around him seemingly ordering him to cover up :D

The suggestion was made without reference to any poster's nationality. If Indian posters are immature and add no value to the topic on hand by trolling then so be it. It should however be a general rule imo

Like i said from my own experience on PDF most would be Indians but prepubescent keyboard warriors represent all nationalities and are as deluded and narrow minded as any other.. I guess being a defence forum attracts all kinds of jingoists in their little nationalistic bubbles devoid of even little knowledge of the outside world apart from google

New Delhi and Old Delhi are worlds apart, New Delhi is an bureaucratic, Diplomatic enclave planned well and built by the British, Old Delhi is where the real India thrives in chaos, Thats not to say new suburbs like Gurgaon or Noida are becoming highly developed

Fair to say you cant compare Shanghai to any Indian city atm, Apart from maybe Hyderabad or Chandigah when it comes to maybe cleanness but as far as development goes, Shanghai is decades ahead, As are most Chinese cities

SAffers also don't tolerate much bs. The rest is expressed in my earlier post. No personal attack leveled on you. Just a suggestion on my side. I don't have a lane here ...am more of the open top car sticking in the middle land
where i come from its illegal to drive on the middle lane of motorway. Middle lanes are only to be used for over taking or giving way.

good day

While I can understand due to extreme poverty and non availability of toilets, Indians have to defecate out under the sky but what is with the behavior of not looking for cover? Is this a cultural thing?
I recall a conversation with someone decades ago (1970s?) that it was the culture so it made more sense to bring electricity and educational satellite TV to India first, then push to improve sanitation once the Indian masses saw how other peoples live.

I haven't been there yet since I only toured North India. Have you yet? Is it really good. My old man is planning a trip to Sri Lanka and suggested that we do a bit of South India.

I haven't been to Old Delhi so I can't dispute that. Overall though India and Bangladesh (it seems) is overcrowded and they really need to do something about population control. Too many cows roaming freely in the backroads of India makes the place more crowded. I understand that Hindus regard the cow as a sacred animal. We have many Hindus here in SAfrica and they tend to keep the cow in sanctuaries and not allow them to roam around freely.

PS. No criticism of Hinduism and Hindus..just an observation about certain areas of India
