NUST students bag first position at the Stanford Longevity Design Challenge held in California

After defeating teams from all over the world, TAME, a smart wearable for tremor acquisition and minimization, has brought accolades to Pakistan by winning the Stanford Center on Longevity Design Challenge 2017, held in California US.

The Stanford Center on Longevity Design Challenge is a worldwide competition that offers cash prizes and free entrepreneurial-related guidance to the winners. The students from universities all around the world participate in the competition to earn these worthy rewards.

This year the competition was focused on such design projects and products which are modeled to optimize life of human beings. The team TAME was able to get into the finals of this year’s Longevity challenge and consequently bagged the first position at the final which was held in California USA, on 30th of March 2017.

This team from Pakistan competed against teams from renowned universities from across the globe including those from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cornell University, Virginia Tech, University of Sao Paolo, Beijing University and Stanford University itself.

The Team TAME includes students from National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Islamabad campus and are recent Electrical Engineering graduates from SEECS. TAME was recently featured in TechJuice 25 under 25 series too. Here is the profile of TAME.

Tame is a wearable device for real-time pathological wrist tremor suppression that gives back control to tremor patients for doing daily tasks.

The device has a sensor near the wrist which tracks the wearer’s tremor profile and electrodes that stimulate the muscles to counteract the tremor and suppress it. Instead of a conventional glove, TAME is a wearable device, small and light weight enough to be discreetly worn under a shirt. The device’s sensors and electrodes correspond to positions recommended by neurologists and physiotherapists. TAME has 2 variants; a sleeve, and a wearable with retractable wires.

Absolutely, whether it is our nukes (thermo-nukes), Ababeel, Babur-3, NUST is intricately involved.Kudos to the best engineering minds in South Asia, no question about it.

I believe that if we invest generously in education, this kind of success would become a regular feature and we won't even be able to keep track of that.
Just take two steps

1. Make science more accessible by providing quality content in the mother tongue
2. Spend money on education and research

Even other institutions like graduates of UET Lahore and its faculty members also played a pivotal role in nukes and other strategic developments. I met faculty of UET and their students and I was impressed by some of the projects they did,
I was told that Prof. Iqbal Hussain played a major role in the design of centrifuges used in KRL, his work controlled the vibrations without which those would be instantly destroyed. Similarly the metallurgical department of UET Lahore also played an important role, I saw a group of students did make a working model of scram jet but of course they did not have enough funding..

Great suggestions and i am amazed to hear about the Scram Jet research, no doubt if they were given the appropriate funding they would have got it working for more than 7 seconds in their first attempt, such is the innate talent over here and yes indeed I am aware of UET contribution to KRL and co.Kudos bro

Pakistan needs to invest in good quality wind tunnels in academics and also HPC.. these fields have been neglected. I have a lot of issues with gen Musharraf but I don't know of any other Pakistani leader who invested so much in education as he did during his term, I wished he didn't make the mistakes and continued and we would have at least 8 world class campuses in Pakistan of top foreign universities...
They corrupt and anti-education feudal lords of PPP and PMLN thrashed all that...

Agreed and the role played by Dr Atta-ur Rehman has to be applauded,,,,, though I am no fan of Mushy he certainly deserves credit for his investment in the education sector, the number of PHds shot up tremedously.Kudos
