'Number of urban poor increases by 4.4 million in India'

KOLKATA: Every year the number of urban poor increases by over 4 million in India due to the increasing slums, a top official of the Union Urban Development ministry said here today.
Stressing that the existing slums should be brought under reformation, Secretary of Union Urban Development ministry, Navin Kumar said, "It is necessary to involve private sector which can use the land for creating housing facilities on ownership, rental and rental ownership basis."
"Every year the number of urban poor increases by 4.4 million in India because of increasing slums," Kumar said at a seminar on 'Sustainable Citycon 2011' organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce here.
Services like credit enhancement, ensure flow of capital, reliable infrastructure like water availability, sanitation facilities, urban transportation, are needed for those who are in the Low Income Group in the urban sector.
Kumar said urban and town planning should be done with the help of a master plan and involvement of local bodies.
The Union Secretary said the Centre was evolving schemes on pilot projects under which large-scale maps were created.
"Under national urban development system, some cities are using the state-of art technology , like Indore, Mohali, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana," he said, adding regional development plans were being utilised in metropolitan cities, like Kolkata.
