NRC, Chinese firm sign N650m railway upgrade deal | BusinessDay

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has signed a N650million agreement with the Shanhaiguan Bridge Group Company Limited of China. The deal involves the procurement of twenty brand new pressurised tank wagons; delivery of tank wagons alongside its spare parts, testing; training of NRC engineers in utilization and maintenance.

This hint was dropped by the Adeseyi Sujiwade, managing director Nigerian Railway Corporation during the commissioning of 20 pressurized oil tank wagons inside Apapa Wharf, Lagos.

According to the managing director, the wagons will enhance the provision of haulage services to oil marketers. Nigeria Railway Corporation he pointed out is working assiduously with Total Plc in developing a MoU to be signed by both parties on the movement of Total petroleum products by rail.

He said other oil marketers and distributors to take advantage of the operational and economic benefits of the wagons in moving their petroleum products by rail. With these wagons, you can be rest assured of safe and prompt delivery of your products by Nigerian Railway Corporation, he said.

This is another positive step by the present government’s transformational agenda through the federal ministry of transport which seeks to ensure unhindered and convenient hauling of petroleum products to different parts of the country.

“Following the rehabilitation of the Western line linking Lagos to Kano, the necessity to acquire various categories of rolling stock became more imperative. Therefore the procurement of these pressurized oil tank wagons will help ease traffic congestion” reduce accident and wear and tear of our roads,” he said.

Sijuwade assured that the transport system especially the railway will in no distant time become fully effective with the ongoing project that is yet to be implemented by end of this year and 2014.

“Upon commissioning these tank wagons, we will invariably be taking out about 30 Oil Tankers per trip off our roads. You will further recall that in August 2013, government took delivery of four new locomotives and two telescopic cranes all of which have since been deployed,” Sijuwade said.

Government has ordered 2 sets of Diesel Multiple Units (DMU) each with a carrying capacity of 540 Passengers for intra-city services and 6nos 68-seater air conditioned passenger coaches for inter-city service to be delivered in 2013.

“Recently, order has been placed for the manufacture of two additional locomotives, two power cars and five additional sixty- eight seat air conditioned passenger coaches to be delivered in 2014,” he said.
