North Korea will chart own economic destiny with help of neighboring nations

US President Donald Trump may have promised that North Korea will become "very rich" on the back of US economic assistance if the two sides can reach an agreement over denuclearization, said a Reuters report on Monday. It is good to see Washington's desire to participate in North Korea's economic development, but Trump may have to abandon unrealistic ideas that the US can become the main protagonist in North Korea's economic story.

The North Korean economy remains vulnerable following years of sanctions, so aid and investments are needed to rebuild its economy. The US and Europe are likely to be important sources of investment for North Korea if the UN Security Council loosens economic sanctions, but it is North Korea's neighbors in Asia - such as China and South Korea - that will be main external drivers of North Korea's economic rise.

China and South Korea have a relatively high economic complementarity with North Korea compared with other countries. Pyongyang has worked with Beijing and Seoul to develop special economic zones, which are likely to be the catalysts of the industrial transfer from China and South Korea to North Korea. North Korea's demographic dividend will help the country undertake industrial transfers and integrate itself into the Asian industrial chain.

East China's Shandong Province is home to many South Korean companies, which are paying close attention to North Korea's economic situation in search of potential business opportunities. Economic cooperation among the three nations may pick up as soon as the UN begins to loosen economic sanctions.

China is one of the world's largest consumer economies, a status that will help strengthen its role as North Korea's key export destination. If South Korean companies step up investment in North Korea, China will be an important target export market for those enterprises. The Chinese government's efforts to revitalize the economy in the three provinces in Northeast China will also have a broader impact on the North Korean economy, including driving up demand for its exports.

Economic cooperation with China is likely to occupy an important position in the Pyongyang's economic development plan. For instance, the two countries have large potential for cooperation in fields such as infrastructure.

China and South Korea are North Korea's important economic partners. Their roles in North Korea's possible economic transformation cannot be replaced by the US. If Pyongyang adopts a policy to open up its economy, the isolated country will eventually involve itself into global economy by deepening multilateral cooperation. That will be a story to be written by Pyongyang itself rather than Washington.

Except cheap labor cost, North Korea hasn't any good conditions. Weak agriculture, cold winter, mountain country, 23 million population, no oil, gas, ore

I don't know whether this true or not. South Korea claims there are more than 60 billion barrels crude oil reserves in North Korea (mostly in Sohanman Basin). While China has (only) 25 billion barrels proven oil reserves. But North Korea is too poor and has no technology to drill its own oil.

There is a small chance that NK will become more pro-China, in which case Trump gambled and lost.

The bigger probability is that NK will open up to the West and end up with a colored revolution under anti-China cover similar to Vietnam.

Since Kim Jong Un did not yet go to Beijing after the meeting with Trump, the signs are pointing toward the latter.

A colored revolution (in Vietnam or NK) is not necessarily bad news for China but it puts the onus on China to proactively militarily intervene and create a small pro-China statelet as a buffer zone. This is similar to pro-China rebels in northern Myanmar.

The Orange revolution is good for Vietnam. China can help US and make Vietnam democratic again. By doing so the US will not impose trade tariffs in China

North Korea's population is mostly educable and trainable if they get access to more advanced knowledge. They would easily be able to absorb an advanced knowledge base over time. There is a group of stunted population but that demographic group would go away overtime as they get access to trade. Under the right conditions I don't doubt their ability in educating population and upgrading their economy to middle income levels in a generation. They have many of the institutions present. Over time they should be able to effectively upgrade their industries.

By different reports and business activity over the years, North Korea has an abundance of a wide range of ore reserves, especially rare earths. What they lack are the capital inputs for large scale extraction and stable environment for long term investment. Their mineral wealth shouldn't come as a surprise as North Korea is part of the Changbai Mountain range which includes the mountain range of Eastern North East China and North Korea. This region in China at least is known to be home to large mineral reserves. South Korea estimates North Korean mineral wealth to be $6-10 trillion.

They also have some good natural products like large wild ginseng.

The natural wealth of North Korea would be more than enough to give them a kick into modernization.

If North Korea pursues joint development of its offshore oil with China, their demand would be met domestically and more. They also have onshore oil reserves and just need basic capital inputs to meet their demands. North Korea's oil refining capacity exceeds their current demand by a factor of 5 due to industrial decline since the 70s. Most of their industry is a relic of that time period.

Under the right conditions (within feasibility and likelihood), North Korea would be a decently well of nation.

Damn! With abundant natural resources and access to sea of Japan (east sea), if I were China's president, I would offer them provincial status or special administration region status like Hong Kong. :cheesy:

谁告诉你中国支持缅甸北部叛军的,中国一直支持缅甸政府军,那些叛军拿的CIA的钱专门破坏中缅关系。自己看看人民日报。

Don't be naive. It is in China's interest to keep the pro-China 果敢 rebel alive as a card to play against Myanmar. If this card is lost, Myanmar will turn against China very, very fast.

The other rebel groups are Myanmar's own business. China does not care.

No self delusion please. North Koreans are very anti-China and look down on China. Kim Jong Un has two paths now: submit to USA or submit to China. It is far more likely they will choose the former. So a colored revolution is just a matter of time. When colored revolution starts in North Korea, China must take proactive action and carve out a buffer zone including Sea of Japan port.

I believe the North Koreans are competent and disciplined, otherwise they won't be able to develop nukes and ICBM with just 23m people.
lots of CHina help

North Korea also has large deposits of rare earth metals. Few countries have large deposits of those.

官媒新闻联播+人民日报都点名批评的果敢,你觉得是中国支持的,脑回路惊人。我告诉你,有群人拿着钱宣传果敢,明目张胆

Nah, I don't think North Korea is anti China. Lil Kim met China's president twice before meet Old Trump. That means China is their main ally. And I don't think Lil Kim would abandon his throne easily.

$10 trillion?

Wow

NK will become SK and Singapore in a generation if opening to the West. The US offers security assurance for NK in exchange of giving up nuclear weapons.

That is the chance that only comes in the lifetime.

And that is something we can learn from the Great Kim. Vietnam has trillions of USD in natural resources too. Oil, coal, gas, rare earth, bauxit, timber, gold, titanium. However we lack of capital and technology. And US nuclear umbrella. Every country wants peace and prosperity.

Russia has more natural resources than the rest of the world added up, natural resources alone won't make you rich.
