Awarding the Nobel peace prize to jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo would contradict its founding principles, China's foreign ministry said today.

Its comments came after the director of Norway's Nobel Institute, Geir Lundestad, said a senior Chinese official had warned him that giving the author the award would affect relations between the two countries.

"This person was sentenced to jail because he violated Chinese law," the foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a news briefing in Beijing.

"His actions are diametrically opposed to the aims of the Nobel prize. Mr Nobel's behest was that the Nobel peace prize be awarded to somebody who promoted peace between peoples, promoted international friendship and disarmament."

Earlier, Lundestad said China's deputy foreign minister, Fu Ying, delivered the warning in a meeting at the Chinese embassy during her visit to Oslo this summer.

"[Such a decision] would pull the wrong strings in relations between Norway and China, it would be seen as an unfriendly act," Lundestad told Norwegian news agency NTB.

Lundestad, who organises the meetings of the five-member Nobel committee, said China had given such warnings before, but that they had no influence on the committee's work.

Václav Havel, Desmond Tutu and others have called on the Nobel committee to give this year's award to Liu, who was sentenced on Christmas Day last year to 11 years in jail for incitement to subvert state power.

The author and former university professor had co-authored Charter 08, a groundbreaking call for reforms in China.

His wife, Liu Xia, told the Guardian that he does not know he has been nominated because he is not allowed access to news from the outside world and she is not allowed to discuss such issues with him when they meet.

Liu served two years in jail for his role in the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests of 1989. He later spent three years in a prison camp for speaking out against China's one-party system.

In an article for the International Herald Tribune last week, Havel and other signatories to Charter 77 – which inspired Charter 08 – praised Liu for "more than two decades of unflinching and peaceful advocacy for reform".

The Nobel committee is due to announce the winner of this year's peace prize in Oslo on 8 October.

Give it to him if they want, it's a political football anyway. I really do wish they'd separate the Nobel peace prize from the merit based scientific prizes.

Would be the first Nobel Prize ever given to a person on the Chinese Mainland in the 110 year history of the Nobel Prizes. Thats a real shame. I guess if China can make Japan back down they should not have any trouble with Norway.

The Nobel peace prize is a joke these days. These guys can't even agree on any particular criteria. This prize is highly biased and doesn't carry much respect in my eyes. Though that doesn't belittle some of the recipients to whom it has been deservedly awarded. One favorite of mine is Grameen and Muhammad Younus.

I lost a lot of respect for the prize when they gave it to Obama to be honest.

One day, they'll give the "peace prize" to Bin Laden.

They gave it to a violent Dalai Lama anyways for his "non-violent" bloody riot in 1959.

The definition of "peace" is different between West and East. :disagree:

It is more than just a lot respect. It is actually a HUGE respect from warlords and weapon dealers to Mr. Obama, as he was escalating the Afghanistan war relentlessly the moment the prize is awarded.

I really wish Liu Xiaobo can be awarded a Nobel peace prize.

Mr.Liu is, of course, famous for saying the West should colonize China for 300 years so China can become a modern country. Europhilia among the Chinese public need a serious clampdown, and it would be the perfect opportunity for the Chinese public to know what a bunch of anti-Chinese racists those Europeans still are.

The anti-chinese sentiments amongst these dissenters is an interest angle. What are your thoughts?

Mr.Liu is of the Red Guard generation, I dare say most liberal intellectuals of that generation are anti-Chinese. I prefer to call them Mao's monsters, although in the end they rebelled against their master's ideology, all they can do is to serve someone else's. They do not have the ability to think either rationally or critically.

I figure Obama is about a much as a whimp and pro moslem as you will ever see in an American President.

It is called Muslim not moslem, next time don't be disrespectful if you want to stay on this forum.

I just hope we don't see too many nationalists trumpeting that it was because of the pressure if the guy doesn't get picked

(In a low key voice) I thought this has already been proven to not work.

The red guard generation showed us how important a decent education is to youngsters.

Absurd to assume western imperialism would work towards the betterment of the subject people. I don't usually pay much attention to these activists but I am genuinely interested now. How does he come to the conclusion that western imperialism would change China for the better? Can someone explain this guy to me?

(working on a chem paper due tomorrow and it's f'ing driving me nuts, need a little distraction)
