No Indians in World Cup XI
The International Cricket Council has selected a team of the best players at the 2015 World Cup, and sadly for India, none of its cricketers feature even though they got to the semifinal.
It marks a sharp turnaround from the 2011 World Cup, when Yuvraj Singh was named player of the tournament and several of his teammates featured in the list after Indian won the final in Mumbai.
This time, the team is packed with players from the two finalists, Australia and New Zealand. Despite having a disappointing final and being on the losing team, Brendon McCullum has been named captain.
Four other New Zealanders made the cut, as well as three Australians, two South Africans and a Sri Lankan – the one and only Kumar Sangakkara, who scored a record four centuries in a row.
Brendan Taylor of Zimbabwe is the 12th man.
Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan can count himself unlucky not to get into the team, but he couldn’t quite match the feats of McCullum and Martin Guptill, who scored a World Cup record 237 not out in the quarterfinal and was the tournament’s top scorer with 547 runs.
And though Indian fast bowlers Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav performed well, they weren’t quite good enough to budge the top wicket-takers Mitchell Starc and Trent Boult, or South Africa’s Morne Morkel.
“There were so many brilliant individual performances during the tournament that it was impossible to fit them into the team,” the ICC said. “The panel eventually came up with this side, which, in their view, was the most balanced outfit that is capable of beating any side on any given day,” it said.
Here is the selection for team of the tournament. Do you agree with the ICC’s choice?
Martin Guptill (New Zealand)
Brendon McCullum, captain (New Zealand)
Kumar Sangakkara, wkt (Sri Lanka)
Steven Smith (Australia)
A.B. de Villiers (South Africa)
Glenn Maxwell (Australia)
Corey Anderson (New Zealand)
Daniel Vettori (New Zealand)
Mitchell Starc (Australia)
Trent Boult (New Zealand)
Morne Morkel (South Africa)
Brendan Taylor, 12th man (Zimbabwe)
