No foreign aid in war against terror during five years
ISLAMABAD, Feb 2 (APP): Pakistan, being the frontline state in the international war against terror has rendered more sacrifices than the international forces in Afghanistan.But the international community did not reciprocate accordingly to help the country in enhancing the capacity building of its law enforcement agencies as well as to revitalise its economy which was badly affected due to terrorism and economic recession across the world.
According to Interior Ministry sources, the country did not receive financial assistance by foreign countries for capacity building of police department, during the last five years to combat terrorism.
However, the IGP NWFP has informed that US embassy provided an amount of Rs. 1,48,20,000 in year 2008-09 for operation support to meet the expenditure on account of POL and repair of vehicles in connection with IDPs and flood relief efforts.
The NAS of US embassy has also committed an amount of $ five million for the supply and installation of Husco Bags Security Barriers during the current year.
It is pertinent to mention here that as many as 2,072 persons including law enforcement agencies personnel were killed and 6,253 injured in 1,780 incidents of terrorism across the country during the last 10 months.
The terrorist attacks include 80 suicide attacks in which 775 persons were killed and 1,975 were injured.
284 attacks on Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) claimed 242 lives, while 564 received injuries.
Similarly, 164 bomb blasts reported during the period in which 240 persons were killed and 961 were injured. 225 hand grenade explosions claimed 26 lives while injuring 500 people.
435 IED explosions caused death to 338 people, while 1,171 persons were injured. 369 rocket attacks claimed 103 lives and injured 436 others. Similarly, 32 missile fire by terrorists killed 38 persons and injured 80 others.
As many as 102 persons were killed in 145 mine explosions and 199 others were injured. 208 persons fell prey to 46 incidence of sectarian violence, while 367 were injured.
In order to curb the terrorist activities the government has taken a number of steps including special training courses for capacity building of law enforcement agencies, crack down on banned organizations, establishment of citizen security and vigilance committees and others.
However, due to lack of resources the country needs the help of international community to revitalise its economy and enhance capacity of law enforcement agencies to counter terrorism.
