The government has rejected a DRDO proposal for extension to one of its senior scientist, keeping in line with the new policy to infuse "fresh air" into the organisation.
The DRDO's departmental peer review committee had recommended the extension of service to Prof M P Kaushik (DRDE Director). However, the government did not agree to it and he has now retired, sources said.
Sources said besides Kaushik, three other scientists have also been recommended by DRDO Chief Avinash Chander for an extension but it was not clear as to what decision has been taken with regard to their cases.
With several of DRDO's programmes being behind schedule, Modi had in August sent out a strong message to it by flaying the 'chalta hai' attitude.
Seeking to give more responsibilities to the youth, Modi had urged the DRDO to make provisions that in five out of its 52 labs people with only less than 35 years of age are employed and the power of ultimate decision-making is also vested in them.
"Lets us take a bold decision by giving the youth an opportunity. We will tell them that the world is going ahead, you show us (the way). The youth is highly capable and it can deliver. 20-25 year old youth would do very well in cyber security area as they are oriented towards that and the results will be very good," he had said.
"We have taken several risks, let us take one more risk an we will see. There is need for fresh air to be infused and this will help us all," Modi had said.
Interestingly, most director generals at the headquarters and the heads of six of DRDO's 54 labs and establishments are currently on extension. As many as 10 of the 16 top DRDO scientists are on extension.
