How can they sit on bomb? Wouldn't the radiation emitting from the devices kill them? Unless all of them including the pilot were wearing suits

So from Quetta to Chaghi, the devices were transported by helicopters.... so much for US spy satellites monitoring convoys of some 50 trucks heading towards the test site.....this was supposed to be classic US ploy so no one knew which truck was carrying the device......in Pakistan's case none of them. :D

Devices don't emit sufficient radiation to be a concern otherwise they would kill the operators during normal operations.

I believe that as long as the radioactive material is not exposed, and as long as the bomb has sufficient insulation then this shouldn't be an issue.

Of course, the bomb itself has to be very well secured and kept stable because of the sensitivity, the trigger mechanism or conventional explosive could prematurely activated.

As long as the material is in sheilded , containers there is no radiation.

The weapon form of the device , has to go thru various stages in order to be in a state we call Nuclear detonation, raw material itself does not explodes on its own. That is why you need scientist and researchers to make a system which ensures a safe detonation and not every day joe can make such a weapon.

Complex process to make a weapon grade item

Casing must be made of lead. Besides there are allowable limits of radiation that one can take over a given period.

You took it literally, what he meant was they travelled with the devices in the same helos.
and no the devices before explosion are not radio active, because the critical mass required for radiation is achieved during the trigger process through implosion
