US beef is available in TW but people avoid buying it. Under the US pressure, Taiwan's government increased the acceptable level of the dangerous contaminant on US originated beef, but, the US seems not pleased. They have that stupid "We love US beef" sticker on every package of US beef. But people prefer NZ and Australia beef.

I, for one, never buy US beef.

Too bad TW gov't looks up to US for some handouts in their separatist intent, but, the US is a master that won't be easily pleased. The new TP governor seems more colonized in his mind, so, should he become the President one day, maybe he can please the master. He has potential.

According to the U.S. Treasury Department, at the end of August 2014, more than a third of the debt was owned by foreign countries (34.4%). The largest foreign holders of U.S. debt were Mainland China (7.2%) and Japan (7.0%). What is the consequence of having such a large percentage of debt held by foreign nations? It depends. It depends on the relationship between the U.S. and the specific foreign country. It also depends on the global interest rate environment. Finally, it depends on the geo-political climate and the degree of fear around the globe. This is the case because when fear rises money flows into U.S. Treasuries which is viewed as a safe place to invest.

Why would any sane person want to be part of TPP or TTIP as that would render the little souvereignty they have to the US and it's corporations.

Well, the opposite could be said -- by removing the remaining restrictions, Japanese Corporations could have free range in the US Market, the same for US Corporations.

For example, in 2014 fiscal year, the two way trade between the United States and Japan was at $ 200.9 Billion , with Japan having a positive trade balance of $67 Billion. The possibility of doubling this trade from $200 billion to say $400 billion is possible. Given, the high market saturation that would be available.

Anyways, in a positive sign; just the January 2015 trade volume between Japan and the United States is already at $12 Billion. With Japan enjoying a positive balance of close to $6 Billion.

Taiwan will never be allowed into the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement until it removes restrictions on the import of US beef and pork, a conference on US-Taiwan relations was told on Friday.

“It would be difficult to exaggerate the importance of agricultural issues, especially beef and pork, to [US] Congressional House and Senate attitudes about the TPP,” analyst Chris Nelson said.

I have truly underestimated the importance and full potential of the US-Japan bilateral trade , and have placed excessive importance on the Japanese-Chinese bilateral trade. It is in the US where the positive trade balance is coming from, and from the looks of it, is increasing. Our two way trade is ever increasing, surprisingly.

5 years ago , it was at $190 Billion. Now , it has already passed the $200 Billion mark.

Cool, for the economy all the civil rights and democratic principles can be put into the dustbin. Companies can sue the country for not allowing them to sell you toxic food that the people don't want on their table, not in a court but in an arbitrery tribunal in Washington, where foreigners can only lose. All the basic utilities must be privatised, including water, even if the people vote against it. Once it's privatised, it's not allowed to ever be nationalised again, even if the people want that.Tthey will not even be allowed to pump water from their private ground as that would be theft.

I don't have anything witty, naughty, stupid or intelligent to say. So I'll say this:

American people have the utmost respect and admiration for Japan. Our friendship has stood for 70 years and by the good graces it will last 70 more. Our cooperation, our partnership is as solid as ever, despite an erroneous piece of bad news here or there, both nations still have their own interests to look out for, but our levels of cooperation far outpace our areas of contention. Our trade relationship grows, our military capabilities grow, our political cooperation grows, and shows no signs of slowing.

200 billion in trade? Expect that to climb even higher as our trade relationship is grown as a hedge against over-reliance on China (yes, I mentioned it, and I know, that's not too popular on PDF, but it is still a reality).
