RAWALPINDI: The National Logistics Cell (NLC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Daimler AG -the German automotive corporation that owns Mercedes-Benz – for the local assembly and production of Mercedes‐Benz trucks in Pakistan.

The MoU was signed on behalf of NLC by Major General Mushtaq Faisal, the director general, and Zia Ahmed, chief executive officer of Pak NLC Motors. On behalf of Mercedes‐Benz Special Trucks, Klaus Fischinger, head of the executive committee, and Dr Ralf Forcher, head of sales, signed the MoU.

Also present at the signing ceremony were Naseem Shaikh, director and general manager at Shahnawaz Limited, and Ahmed Naeem of Shahnawaz Limited, the authorised distributor of Daimler AG in Pakistan.

In a statement issued on Saturday, NLC said the local assembly of Mercedes‐Benz trucks will mark a major shift in the logistics and transportation industry’s preference towards European manufacturers who offer technologically advanced products that combine superior performance, environment friendliness, reliability and road safety.

Major General Faisal termed the MoU a historic moment for Pakistan’s commercial vehicle industry. “The local assembly of Mercedes‐Benz trucks would prove as a strategic opportunity that would leverage the modernisation of Pakistan’s logistics industry,” said the official.

“Because of the incentives given in the Auto Development Policy 2016‐21, locally-assembled Mercedes‐Benz trucks would be offered at competitive prices.”

He added the development will ensure healthy competition in the trucking industry and meet the logistics requirements of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Dr Ralf Forcher, head of sales at Mercedes‐Benz Special Trucks, said Pakistan’s infrastructure and construction sectors have registered significant growth in recent years, giving a boost to the logistics industry that, in turn, means increased demand for commercial vehicles.

It is pertinent to mention that strong growth in Pakistan’s GDP has contributed towards a significant boost in greater demand for commercial vehicles. In addition, CPEC, which includes a wider transportation network that link seaports in Gwadar and Karachi with northern Pakistan, as well as points further north in China and Central Asia, has given a boost to the auto sector in the country.

IMC sources 126 million local Auto parts every day

ISLAMABAD: “Indus Motor Company (IMC) sources 126 million local parts every working day and if you touch the Corolla, there is a 90% chance that you are touching a locally manufactured part.” This was stated by the Senior Director of IMC Tariq Ahmed Khan while speaking at Pakistan Auto Parts Show (PAPS).

“The true growth of the industry lies in self-reliance and localisation and as an auto manufacturer based in Pakistan, our vision is to make for Pakistan, in Pakistan and with Pakistan,” Tariq added

IMC is the platinum sponsor of the annual auto parts show organised by Pakistan Association of Auto Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM).

“The contribution of the auto industry to the economy of Pakistan cannot be underestimated as IMC alone contributes 1 per cent of the total revenue collection by the National Exchequer,” he added.

“According to an independent research conducted in Pakistan, the automotive market demand is expected to reach 500,000 units by 2025. However, if the current trend of growth continues, we will cross this mark much earlier,” said Tariq.

“Under ADP 16-21, new employment opportunities will be created and we are hopeful that this policy will generate employment for roughly 4 million people in Pakistan,” he added.

He said that IMC is working to the best of its capabilities to realise the ADP 16-21 vision but to achieve this vision; a vibrant domestic manufacturing industry is needed along with conducive economic conditions and stable policies.

“The increasing trade deficit coupled with pressures on the Pak Rupee, point towards a difficult time for local manufacturers in Pakistan. Rising fuel prices, as well as regulatory duties, do not make the situation any better,” he added.

He said that as part of our vision to develop Pakistan’s local automotive industry, we warmly welcome the new players and expect that they will play their part in localising critical vehicle components and drive growth in the local industry, generating employment opportunities for thousands and contributing significantly to the GDP of Pakistan.

He congratulated PAAPAM on organising the Pakistan Auto Show and said that this has now become a great event in Pakistan assisting local vendors as they provide a platform to encourage investments.

Finally, enough of expensive Chinese/Japanese trash imports. Need euro car makers.

The generals aren't any smarter than the civvies. Assemble this and that with inflated costs and no industrial, economic and technological benefit to the country. Assembling for the sake of assembling. No, this isn't any different than those other assembly agreements with suzuki. No manufacturing, no business plan, no offsets, no r&d, same old crap product. You would think they would have learned from their military procurement disasters like the subs.
