CHENNAI: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday formally handed over two types of indigenously built high-power multi-fuel engines to the Army.

The engines manufactured by the Engine Factory, Avadi -- a unit of Ordnance Factory Board, Department of Defence Production -- were fully indigenised for the first time under the Centre's Make in India programme.

At a function held at the factory, Sitharaman formally handed over the documents of the two types of engines to Vice Chief of Army Staff Devaraj Anbu.

The first engine of 1000 HP engine -- V92S2 engine -- powers T-90 Bhisma Tank, the second engine -- V-46-6 engine -- powers the T-72 Ajeya Tank and its variants.

Though these engines were manufactured based on Russian design, India was depending on Moscow for its supply of critical assemblies like turbocharger, supercharger, fuel injection pumps.

The Engine Factory under the Make in India programme manufactured the two engines with 100 per cent local parts.

Earlier, localisation level was about 73 per cent, officials said.

The indigenisation efforts by the Engine Factory would save Rs 80 crore of the exchequer every year.

It also exhibits the self-reliance of the Ordnance Factory Board in manufacturing these engines in India without any import support, the officials added.

The Engine Factory has manufactured more than 12,000 engines since its inception in 1987.

.
This is fine now Make 1500 HP engine very fast to enable India to use it in Arjun and FMBT.

The production of T72M1 in India completed 18 years ago. It took us whole production run+ 18 years after the tank went out of production to fully indigenise its engine...?

That's shameful and no matter for celebration.

Agreed. And If we really need to sustain the coming challenges, it must change.

.
If they have done 100% local parts, that mean we have setup a new industry. So now we have some bases to move forward and start running ahead.

Assembled in India...from Russian parts.

Scamgress never focused on manufacturing sector for defence equipment. They were busy in counting money received as commission on defence deals...

All this changed under Atal G, most of the indigenous projects were put on forefront and development of new ones was started... but scamgress again slowed down/terminated almost all of them...

After BJP's win in 2014, this trend changed and defence forces (top brass) were informed to change their taste from Russian, European and US delights to Indian.

IAF was ready to fly and lose pilots in MiG-21, But they were not ready to have a better indigenous jet as it was not upto their requirement, which kept changing after every 6 months...

Indian Army was ready to induct more Russian T-90s but Arjun was suitable for them due to XYZ reasons... They never informed the press about the frequent engine failure of T-90s in Thar desert and kept pushing that issue under the carpet because that might have lead to reduction in commission... They also kept changing the requirement which lead to delays...

On the other hand, Indian Navy has always preferred indigenous platforms and due to that we have a well established industry and environment for Naval platforms.

If Modi wins in 2019, you will see that IA and IAF would have a drastic change in their mentality and backed by local production, Indian defence Industry would flourish.
