NEW DELHI: A test-flight of the Nirbhay cruise missile, designed to carry nuclear warheads across a range of 1,000 km, failed on Friday. The missle had to be destroyed after it deviated from its pre-decided flight path, shortly after its launch from the Integrated Test Range at Odisha's Chandipur at 11.38am on Friday.

This was the third test of Nirbhay. The first test, in March 2013, too had failed, and the second test, in October 2014, was declared a "partial success".

"The flight was aborted after its guidance system (manufactured by the Research Centre Imarat at Hyderabad) failed yet again. The missile had traveled a distance of 128-km but could not take the required turn at the waypoint and instead nose-dived. It was then put on the self-destruct mode. The failure analysis is underway," said a source.

Nirbhay is a subsonic cruise missile with stealth capabilities, that has been under development for a decade now. It is meant to fulfil the armed forces'demand for nuclear-tipped land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs), that can be launched from land, air or sea.

The troubled missile is flaunted as being intended to match the famed American Tomahawk missiles, as well as an effective counter to Pakistan's Babur LACM.

Nirbhay is meant to give India's armed forces teeth in an intermediae role in terms of function. India has already inducted the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, jointly developed with Russia, with a range of 290 km. It also has the Agni series of nuclear-capable missiles which have ranges from 700 km to over 5,000 km. BrahMos is a short-range conventional weapon while the Agni missiles are ballistic, which means they fly along a parabolic trajectory.

Nirbhay is a cruise missile designed to fly at low altitudes, virtually hugging the terrain, to avoid detection by enemy radars.

After an initial blast off with a solid-propellant booster rocket engine to gain speed and altitude, Nirbhay is supposed to deploy its smallish wings and tail fins in the second-stage to fly like an aircraft. The missile, which flies at a speed of 0.6-0.7 Mach, is designed to be highly maneuverable, with "loitering capabilities" to first identify and then hit the intended target.

We already have

Prahaar - 150 kms range 200 kgs warhead
K-15 - 750 kms range 1000 kgs warhead
K-5 - 3500 kms range 1000 kgs warhead

Nirbhay will be a welcome addition. No hurry.

I dont know why our newspapers get it all wrong- the first test was a partial success as the missile veered off course after 24mins,because of a glitch in navigation system. The second test however was 100% successful as the missile flew for 1050-1100kms at nominal height of 4kms!
This test again failed because of certain reasons that will become apparent after technical investigations. There is no structural instability in the design as such!

Out of 4 tests 3 failed, the successful test (claimed) failed to achieve terrain hugging feature. This time they try it nirbhay dive down into sea. Now sending live pics of fishes. :omghaha:

thing is MOD wants sub launched version of nirbhay more than the land based version but even prahar is good as most of pakistani targets like ammo dumbs , missile storage sites , air bases , radar instalations , army garrisons and bridges are just 15 to 60 Km from the border and here its easily covered by a variety of MBRLs and arty guns :sniper::butcher:

I'd rather have a failed missile test or a satellite launch, than a successful suicide bombing any day of the week, all year round. In fact, I will be more than happy if India's next 10 missile tests fail, as long as polio workers can freely and safely vaccinate children, school-children can freely go to school without the fear of terrorists, our air-force is not used for bombing Indian citizens and our leaders/generals don't go criss-crossing the world asking for aid/alms/baksheesh. If this is what it means to fail, I hope India continues to fail and may you be blessed with whatever definition of success you choose.

hehe.. we were working on a product for about more than an year and failed about 15 times. Each month, we would run the tests and the results were not upto the mark. Well, one of the reasons was, we wanted it to be perfect.

Finally we did it, the 16th time. It's part of the process of development, no compromises.

They dont need to fight india directly, they are much smarter then that to get their hand dirty....:p:. They just need to keep supporting Pakistan, and propping up their military....:what:.

Time for Modi to declare success! With this glorious sucess, shupa powa is ready to take on two front war.

Nah, India can't take on Ding Dong Eleven and his pet 50 cent poodles. Your yapping has scared us.

we already know that and that has been happenning since last 60 years but here we are talking about surface to surface rockets and missiles ... give me one good reason that we attack chinese mainland we just need dettrence and we have enof for that lets talk about western theater ... shall we
