Nigerian Air Force for strong ties with Indian Air Force

The Nigerian Air Force is to embark on joint defence venture programme with local and foreign corporations to attract more economic prosperity to itself and the country.

This is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a seminar titled ``Effective Employment of Airpower for Nation Building, the India’s Perspective’’ held in Kaduna as part of activities to mark the 2012 Air Expo.

The communiqué said the Air Force would revitalise its defence cooperation with the Indian Air Force in areas of joint exercises, establishment of doctrinal and tactical training institutes.

It will also establish cooperation with Indian Air force in the area of inter-institute collaboration and assistance in capacity building from platforms to latest military technologies.

The communiqué said the Air Force would begin a process of integrated aerospace technology geared towards indigenisation of aircraft and systems production.

``The Air Force will lobby the Nigerian Government to collaborate with the Government of India to revitalise the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

``The Air Force will explore characteristic reach and speed as well as competencies in intelligence gathering of its various platforms to curtail the spread of terrorism to Nigeria’s immediate neighbours,’’ it said.

According to the communiqué, the Air Force will seek ways to synergies with other air forces in terms of joint training exercises and co-production of defence platforms and equipment in order to ensure fluid integration during combined operations and interoperability of platforms.

It further said that the Air Force would re-appraise its personnel to ensure recruits have a measure of technology learning and competence before appointment to service.

``The Air Force would fast-track its technology transfer drive through offsets in contract agreements during acquisition of platforms and equipment.’’

The communiqué said the Air Force would continue to lobby the Federal Government through the Ministry of Defence, for defence funding based on empirical values such as percentage of the country’s GDP.

LCA still needs some time, it is more likely that they want Dhruv, which is actually the only aircraft we could export at the moment, all others are either not fully developed or inducted yet.

I am told that a squad of LCA will form a part of Strategic assistance provided to Afghanistan post 2014.. Along with IAF pilots based in Afghanistan as trainers. On Same lines as PAF folks in Arab countries...

The plane needs to move out of prototype phase before it is ready for anyone to buy. For now, a potential customer is a far cry. Then there is the issue of breaking into an aviation market dominated by Multi-Billion Dollar names. The JF-17, although carrying China's mark is having a hard time finding a buyer because the big names of the industry are hardly welcoming towards the newbies.

We have Afghan soldiers coming to Pakistan, India, US, Jordan and Turkey for training already. I think that all these nations will be stake holders in the training of the Afghan Army when NATO leaves the region. However, with different combat doctrines and strategy, an amalgam of all those divergent military doctrines will take a toll on the quality of the Afghans.

Well it is very important first of all to ensure that we enable better CBMs between our country and African countries. Nigeria is relatively prosperous and resource rich nation. It has a small but significant Indian population like other African countries. The first and foremost venture in military relations should be counter-terrorism.

Nigerian forces should be encouraged to take training with RR and other special units that have crushed terrorism with ferocity. Boko Haram has been a big nuisance for Nigerian government and people. Before we convince to sell them anything, it is a priority to train their forces deal with Jihad.

That would be a boost to our relations with Afganisthan . Also we can get an access to base , which we can link it with Tajikistan air base . I wont wonder if more squadrons are delivered to Afganisthan . Absolute win win situation . 2016-2018 would be a good time frame what do you say?

Not necessarily . Jf17 was developed by China only for export to Pakistan . You can see China noting the names of its export customers for J20 . Any way we are likely to transfer a squadron of LCA to Afganisthan free just like how US gave you F-16s .

For free??? You must be kidding, why should we waste at least $400 millions that we paid for them and then add even more for MK2s to replace them? If they can afford fighters, they can have them and if they can't afford to pay for 2 x squads of LCAs, they can't afford to operate them anyway.

Are you sure you are on the right forums? Your lack of knowledge indicates that a Defence Forum might be somewhere you may end up as a result of a mistake but never on purpose. Pakistan was not given a squadron of F-16 for "Free", these were F-16s that were paid for in the 80s but their delivery was cancelled due to the Pressler Amendment.
As for you giving the LCAs 'Free' to Afghanistan, If they can't buy them, they probably can't maintain them, your planes will end up like the rest of the Afghan Airforce.................Scrap. If you want to give them planes, you will have to set up repair and haul facilities, train the staff, train technicians, set up forges for heavy metal parts, train more staff, train more technicians. India will end up spending 30 times the value of the aircrafts on the facilities made to maintain them. Sound like a bargain?

Certainly, India would be the best option for filling the void in Afghanistan after the US leaves if it's Indian interests that are being sought. For Afghan Interests to be given slightly higher priority, I would back Turkey or the SCO to take a leading role in Afghanistan. So, do you want me to go into detail?
