China's manned submersible challenges world's first 7,000-meter dive

25-06-2012

China's manned submersible, Jiaolong, the manned submersible named after a dragon in Chinese mythology, succeeded in reaching 7,020 meters below the surface of the sea Sunday morning in its fourth dive into the Mariana Trench.

Among about 90 operational manned submersibles thoughout the world, only 12 can descend to 1,000meters undersea and even fewer can dive deeper.

Before China's attempts, only manned submersibles of the United States, Japan, France and Russia have dived below 6,000 meters - 6900 meters.

China breaks the new world record.

Both the Trieste and Deepsea Challenger are manned submersible. But most news around the world still said that China broke the record. So what is the difference ?

The mantle for deepest-diving manned vehicle has now passed to China from Japan, whose Shinkai 6500 held the previous record for a modern-day state-owned craft

. .
, the only manned expeditions to have gone deeper were the dives of the Trieste bathyscaphe in 1960 and the dive of the Deepsea Challenger in 2012, both diving to Challenger Deep. However, those vessels could not navigate horizontally along the bottom of the sea bed, severely limiting their scientific exploration capability.

Jialong holds the record for submersibles that can navigated horizontally.
