'There was an exchange of opinions on topical issues relating to international affairs, including the possibility of contributing to the UN-OPCW mission on eliminating Syria's chemical weapons in order to implement the UN Security Council's resolution 2118,' a message posted on the Ministry's official website says.
'Problems and the prospective development of Russia-NATO relations have been discussed. Sergei Lavrov highlighted the need for the implementation of joint decisions on the formation of a common space of peace, security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region,' says a report posted on the ministry website after the negotiations Lavrov and Rasmussen held in Brussels on Tuesday.
'[The sides] noted the importance of the implementation of principles of genuine equality and indivisible security proclaimed in the founding documents of the Russia-NATO Council and approved by the chiefs of state.
They expressed their readiness to carry on the search for solutions to the missile defense problem, to build up confidence and predictability in military political affairs and to ensure the steady growth of cooperation in response to common risks and security threats - terrorism, sea piracy, natural and man-made catastrophes, as well as in Afghanistan,' the ministry said.
The sides 'exchanged opinions about pressing global affairs, including the possible assistance to the UN/OPCW mission in the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons consistent with UN Security Council Resolution 2118,' it said.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said he agreed to the proposal by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to contemplate the possibility of supporting the United Nations (UN)-Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) joint mission on destruction of Syrian chemical weapons.
'Agreed w/ Min Lavrov to explore possibility of supporting #UN @OPCW mission on destruction of Syria #CW in framework of @NATORussia Council,' Fogh wrote on Twitter after meeting with the Russian foreign minister at the NATO headquarters.
Talks with Lavrov were constructive, the NATO chief said.
'Discussed full range of topics [relevant] to @NATORussiaCouncil cooperation,' Fogh Rasmussen said.
'Important to continue @NATORussia Council high-level political dialogue this year on areas where we agree and where we don't,' the NATO secretary general said.

Opening the talks, Rasmussen welcomed the continuation of high-level dialogue between Russia and NATO.
The meeting will highlight the entire bilateral agenda from the fight against terrorism, piracy and drug trafficking to partnership on Afghanistan to missile defense. The sides will exchange opinions on pressing global security issues, including the situation in Syria.
Lavrov is in Brussels to attend the 32nd Russia-EU summit opening in the afternoon.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to meet with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. 'Lavrov's meeting with A. Fogh Rasmussen in Brussels is scheduled for January 28,' the Ministry's Department of Information and Press said.
'The parties will discuss the problematic issues and prospects for the Russia-NATO relationship. Lavrov will draw the NATO secretary general's particular attention to the need to put into practice the joint decisions to form a joint space of peace, security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region,' the foreign ministry said.
'The Russian side will emphasize the importance of continuing the search for solutions on the missile defense issue, boosting confidence and predictability in military and political affairs, progressive growth of cooperation in responding to shared risks and security threats - terrorism, piracy, natural and man-made disasters, as well as on Afghanistan,' the Foreign Ministry said.
'There will be an exchange of opinions on the pressing topics of the international agenda, in particular on the possibilities of assisting the UN/OPCW (United Nations/Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) in the elimination of chemical weapons,' the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
'Mr. Lavrov will highlight the importance of implementing their joint decisions aimed to create a common space of peace, security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region,' the white paper said.

The Russian ministry said the two chiefs were going to exchange opinions on urgent agendas, including possible assistance to the UN mission in Syria aimed to scrap the country's deadly chemical weapons.
