Colombo: An unmarked mass grave has been found in Sri Lanka's former war zone, the first discovery of an unmarked gravesite since troops defeated Tamil rebels more than four years ago, police said on Sunday.

Construction workers in the coastal district of Mannar stumbled on at least 10 skeletal remains buried at a location where they were laying a new water pipe, said police spokesman Ajith Rohana.

"A judicial medical officer has gone to the site. Further forensic examinations are underway to determine the age of the mass grave," Rohana told AFP. "Additional staff are being inducted for the investigation."

There was no immediate indication who the victims were or how and when they had died.

However, it is the first time that evidence of a mass grave has emerged in the former war zone since troops declared victory over separatist Tamil Tiger guerrillas in May 2009.

Both government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels have been accused of killing civilians during the 37-year separatist war.

Sri Lanka has denied allegations that its troops killed up to 40,000 civilians in the final months of fighting.

Earlier this year construction workers stumbled on another mass grave in central Sri Lanka, hundreds of kilometres away from the conflict zone.

At least 154 people had been buried in the grave at the central district of Matale, a hotbed of an anti-government uprising between 1987 and 1990.

Local forensic experts said it dated back to a period when the then-government led a crackdown on leftist Sinhalese rebels.

The insurgency by the mainly Sinhalese JVP was unrelated to the separatist campaign in the north and east by Tamil rebels.

The UN has estimated that at least 100,000 people were killed in Sri Lanka's Tamil separatist war.

Should investigate and punish those LTTE members who have involved in this case.

. .
And it will create political storm in India too.

.
This is the 1st grave yard found and it had only 10 dead bodies ! These can be dead bodies of LTTE cadres or Sinhalese that were killed by LTTE as well

Always wondered how this figure 40,000 dead civilians came in to discussions ! Who counted the number of dead people ? how does the media know that they are all civilians and they were killed by amry ? How can anyone say army killed 40,000 (some media says its 70,000 and some says its 200,000 ! ) if no one saw what happened and no one counted or saw the dead bodies ?

.
Why? Do yu think SL army wouldnt have involved in this case?

Mannar is located opposite side of the major battle field in the last war, according to media reports these 11 bodies have found near to a old LTTE camp. so this should be either LTTE bodies or bodies of captured SL Army soldiers mainly.

Lol...!! Imagination at your best..! I am not telling LTTE wouldnt have done it,..! But without an investigation, you are blaming them is the one that amuses me, exactly having an attitude of SL army and SL govt..
Every army gets allegations thrown at them.. Its upto the Army and govt to probe such allegations, and punish erring officials if any. But SL govt and its army even to probe any such allegations is the one what amuses me and many international observers...! SL govt have not even ordered any such probe against any allegations, which makes me wonder, whether SL army might have been involved..!

You are right..! Its tough to calculate war dead during such times. UN have its own mechanisms to calculate war dead .! They calculate from the population last reported from that area, and the number of people remaining after the war, number of missing persons reported etc. One cannot possibly count such staggering dead bodies, honestly

what's the imagination in here dude? I clearly have mentioned it should be either LTTE bodies or SL Army soldiers. It cannot be civilians coz they don't live around tiger camps normally. SL army have fully rights to kill terrorists officially because they are the legal army of our country but Tamil tiger terrorists do not have such right to kill soldiers of that country. so if it is done by tamil tiger terrorists they have to face SL law....lol

My poor. I had drawn reponses from ur first and the second post. But whether they can civilians or LTTE or SL army, govt can launch probes to ascertain things.

`They calculate from the population last reported from that area, and the number of people remaining after the war, number of missing persons reported etc.`! haha

So how does this prove that all the missing people were killed by the army ? LTTE recruited people by force during the last stages and it is also proved that LTTE used them as a human shield so it could be that these missing people were killed by LTTE as well !!

See the UN report. They have given the number of innocent civilians killed in the war and not who killed whom.
And its also a well known documented fact, inspite of knowing people used as human shields, SL army proceeded with full power , resulting in death of large civilians, which still now SL refuses to investigate

It is wrong to guess so.
The victims could be, 1. SL army, 2. Civilians, 3. LTTE
Perpetrators could be 1. LTTE 2. Any other tamil militant 3. SL army, 4. IPKF

In a war there has been so much violence and so many warring parties it is difficult to see who is the real one.

See the UN report. They have given the number of innocent civilians killed in the war and not who killed whom.

UN report doesnt give any number, it just takes figures from media.

According to law, even if some terrorists take hostage a group of people, the army can attack the terrorists even if the people could die. It depends on the bigger harm. LTTE kept the whole country hijacked for close to 30 years. It is wrong to expect SL to not to go ahead in the offensive.

2. Army didnt see people or LTTE. They firebacked to places where gunfire was coming from.
3. SL army took difficult and more dangerous paths in order to reduce civilian deaths even sacrificing more of their soldiers. This is even acknowledged by LTTE.
4. GOSL has already started an island wide cencus to find out who has been victimized by the war.

Tamil council to count Sri Lanka war casualties | Business Standard

The provincial government in Sri Lanka's main Tamil region said today it would compile its own death toll from the country's ethnic war, saying an ongoing census would play down the number of casualties.

Tamil officials said the census ordered by President Mahinda Rajapakse last month would give a distorted picture because of its "flawed" terms of reference, arguing that a more credible alternative was needed
