The primary goal and reason for the war was the Al Qaeda camps supported by the Taliban regime.
The success of the war is measured in the number of Al Qaeda attacks on US territory. The rest are nice to have. The Taliban in power, but not supporting Al Qaeda may be considered good enough by politicians, even if the Army generals disagree.

Gulf War 1, they were not in such a state. Honestly it doesn't matter. The B-52 whether Vietnam or Gulf War or Afghanistan, it does what it does best which is drop ordinance. Whether its cruise missiles or guided bombs or even nukes which it was design against the Soviet Union when they were more powerful at the time. And in future with hypersonic missiles and other weaponry, it will keep on doing its job and not be considered obsolete. Course I think the U.S. Air Force should design a new conventional bomber.
