I always thought Russian Engines were the most powerful engines because of their high Thrust/Weight ratio. Now as the Russians improve the reliability of their engines, they may finally outpace the Western engines. Also, lately the Western engines are suffering from bad reputation as their engine parts keep falling of in flight.
