New Gwadar Int'l Airport to be operational by 2023 (app.com.pk)

iSLAMABAD, Oct 17 (APP):The new Gwadar International Airport (NGIA), the $246m greenfield airport being built at an area of 4,300 acres would be operational by September 2023.

According to the official source, the passenger terminal building of the project would be completed by June 2023; work related to air traffic control by March 2023, while the overall construction of the airport would be finished before September 2023.

The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) was being managed and operated by Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). To be owned by a joint venture between Pakistan, Oman, and China, the airport would handle domestic and international operations.

The airport development is a part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) development, which was a cornerstone of China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative.

The biggest in Pakistan and would also become the nation’s second airport capable of handling A380 aircraft upon its commissioning in 2022. It was expected to stimulate the development in Gwadar peninsula and boost trade between Pakistan and China.

The airport would be operated under open sky policy and developed under the guidance of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).The New Gwadar International Airport project was initiated as an early harvest high-priority project of the CPEC programme in 2014.

It was approved by the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) in January 2015.The project was being funded through a grant agreement signed between China and Pakistan in May 2017. Soil testing on the project site was started in January 2018 and involved drilling of 300 boreholes in various locations. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in March 2019.

With the Afgan consolidation and Iranian cooperation in terrorism, all the major hurdles toward Gwadar becoming an international hub are getting removed one by one….

There is NO drinking water in Gwadar to support large population ! Even the locals struggle for clean drinking water. We are not UAE or Kuwait with billions of dollars for seawater desalination plants. Gwadar can be Naval base and seaport with limited population. Why don't you guys first go and visit Gwadar by yourself. I have friends who wanted to invest but that have returned totally disappointed from Gwadar.

As I understand there are 2 desalination plants, be it of small capacity, one built by the navy the other by the government. Desalination and clean drinking water were the first initiatives considered by both China and Pakistan for Gwadar.

So am quite taken aback by the recent water emergency. Are the desalination plants working up to capacity or has the population increased to manifolds?. the latter of which I doubt.

But am sure local authorities are on the issue to provide necessary means to improve daily life in Gwadar.

I hope it is designed to facilitate fast transfer of goods between Sea, land and air.

Oh..it will be operational similar to the way CPEC got operational?

Reports are that China do not want to progress with CPEC in it's existing form....They want to change road and even port Gwadar to Karachi due to safety concerns and uncertainty in neighbourhood (Baluchistan's neighbourhood i.e. Afghanistan and Iran)...Pakistan's government seems to agreeing to it. Gwadar is going in a cold storage.

Karachi is a mega city and less secure than Gwadar, so highly unlikely.

The project is not going anywhere for many years... They keep making announcements every now and then... Truth is, Gwadar isn't really panning out as planned because there is just too much risk an instability there... Building an airport in Gwadar is literally building something in the middle of nowhere.

The people of Gwadar needs the basics in place first.. like health, education, and basic infrastructure necessities like water, gas, and electricity. Not a fancy airport to fly in and out Chinese port workers.

The project is on track. However India is escalating so Pakistan and China needs to deal with them first.
