New Dead Line: India must try to become developed country by 2030: Jaitley

So it's just a general statement without specific targets to achieve? HDI target? GDP per capita?

GDP per capita (PPP) in 2015:

Malaysia 26,315
World 15,638

China 14,107

India 6,162

China, which is 20 years ahead of India in most measures, is still not considered a developed nation. And they only aim to be a developed country by 2049, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic. It's also only around 2047 Hong Kong will be fully under the PRC administration, which Deng Xiaoping predict China to be a developed economy like HK.

Malaysia, which has more than 4 times the per capita GDP of India, aim to be a developed country by 2030 with annual 6% growth according to their Prime Minister.

No one sees the average of the world to reach 'developed' status any time soon.

Indian politicians should just lie low and allow India to grow quietly instead of making superfluous goals every time, only to backtrack later when the goal looks impossible. Wish India all the best.

Indian president back in 2005 predicted that India will be a superpower. India even made a feature film about become a superpower. It's just the nature of Indians to brag about becoming superpowers or developed economy.

Not everybody gets plum govt jobs with safe retirement plans.

Nobody believes that even for a second. Having a developed country life and superpower status are two completely different things.
.

Well, you maybe thinking it is easier to be a Superpower than to be a developed country. Sure, It would be very interesting to see a "Developing Superpower". :cheesy:

What do you mean by superpower? And what do you mean by developed?

moderately developed country by 2050
When we talk about this goal, pls don't forget "moderately".
This is the right term in Chinese, moderately developed by 2050(1949-2049).
The recent goal is a moderately prosperous society by 2020 (1979-2019).

Some other less mentioned goals.
2080 developed
2100 top 10 developed

Really wonder how a Chinese/Indian dominated economy in 2100 will look like.

. . .
Both are clearly defined in international society, and these definitions are well known to all countries except few.

I don't care about what international society defines it as. I want you to define them. You will be surprised how different the realities are.

Do you think the Soviet Union was a developed country?

Indian politicians are well ahead of the game.

Well, if I define the term of "developed country" for today, it should meet the following qualifications:

1. Per capital GDP is above $20,000
2. Average life expectancy is above 78 years
3. Literacy of the whole population is above 95%
4. HDI is above 0.85
5. Uniformed health care system and social welfare system
6. Minimal gender inequity.

To answer your question, yes, USSR was a developed country in her time.

All those are easy by 2030. India's per capita will be $25,000 by then.

Average life expectancy is 66 now, up by 4 years since 2000. That's pretty impressive.

Literacy is above 75. Primary education is already compulsory, up to the age of 14. This change happened only a few years ago, 2009, so the effect will be felt in a few years, when they start passing out.

HDI is 0.6 right now compared to 0.4 in 2000.

Universal health care and welfare systems are starting up. About 30% of the population is insured. So life expectancy and HDI will see drastic improvements in a short time. Three social security schemes were implemented last year. And universal health care for all by 2022.

Gender inequality is the same as in China.

In fact most of these will be achieved in the next 10 years, let alone 2030.

To answer your question, yes, USSR was a developed country in her time.

It wasn't a developed country when it achieved the superpower status in the 60s.

Indians are very optimistic.

By 2030, they won't even have hit middle-income level.
yes we are optimistic, why should be not.
Its not that we keep crying like bangladeshis all the time.
