Using the Y-9 platform,the new AWACS will probably be named KJ-500 with capabilities that rival the KJ-2000。

Next generation rodome-less AWACS that employs digital array technology is on its way:

?????????? ???????????_????_???

The content of the report is based on an interview with Mr. Wang Xiaomo,founder and leading expert of China's AWACS undertakings。

Any more details on this platform?

@cirr

What are some of the major differences between this and the radar on ZDK-03?

The new radome houses a fully digital array radar(DAR)in place of mechanical scanning,thereby discarding the requisite rotating of antenna array on the ZDK-03。

Apart from its many advanced features(google search),the new tech also lends to the possibility that the radome can be so designed as to give the platform best overall aerodynamics。

The next development is to integrate the radar into the plane body,

So it is supposed to be smaller version of KJ-2000 ?

Right。Similar tracking range and target numbers etc。 using a much smaller platform。

The KJ-500 will allow full 3D scanning with no blind spot unlike KJ-200. Possible a scale down version of KJ-2000 with same capabilities or even better spec due to China lacking enough IL-76 platform while urgently need more AWACS to support increasing air fleet.

With proliferation of AESA radars more powerful AWACS are necessary,as AESA radars can easily jam datalink between AWACS and control aircraft,especially in LPI mode i think.Nice move.

So, what does this mean for KJ-200? Replace them?
