Luis Suarez, who plays as a striker for both FC Barcelona and the Uruguay national team, wished Malaysians a happy Chinese New Year (CNY) in a tweet

  • "Other than celebrating and experiencing different cultures in Malaysia, I'm also learning some basic Malaysian words," Suarez wrote in his tweet.

However, while he wished everyone a happy CNY, he attached a photo of him saying "Vanakkam" (hello in Tamil), with Batu Caves as its background.

  • Twitter users ridiculed Suarez for his greeting, and suggested that another photo of him in Penang would have been more suitable for his CNY tweet. The striker seems to have mixed up the different cultures of the country, and has been mocked and criticised by netizens.
  • People have called the incident embarrassing, and the partnership between Suarez and Tourism Malaysia a waste of money.
  • Some have also suggested that Suarez should've used another photo of him in Penang for his tweet about CNY.
  • The photo, featuring Suarez in a traditional Chinese costume with Penang's famous Kek Lok Si Temple as its background, seems more appropriate for the CNY greeting. In contrast, Batu Caves is more popular as the centre for a great religious procession during Thaipusam celebrations

  • The photo in Suarez's tweet was a still taken from a recent Tourism Malaysia video, where he says hello and welcome in Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, and Tamil

Not a complete analysis

Ideological - they support each other to a certain extend i.e anti Hindi, Hindu, caste system, Brahmanism, pro-Tamils rights etc. Tamil nationalism goes a step further to uphold Tamil culture - i.e religion, arts , history etc which is neglected by Dravidianism

However, in recent years Dravidian politicians have deviated from the Dravidian core principles due to ideological bankruptcy and corruption. E.g all the Dravidian political parties in Tamilnadu have form alliances with Indian national parties at one time or the other.

Fringe Dravidian parties forming alliance with BJP in 2014 election

Furthermore, in the current political scenario, the term Dravidian only applies to Tamils. Periyar's Dravidianism influence is limited to Tamilnadu.

Unless theres a revival or overhaul in Dravidian ideology, Dravidian nationalism is at odds with Tamil nationalism , and it will exist in name only

2) No support in Andhra, Kerala or Karnataka

Let me speak from Kerala perspective since he brought us up.
We're Arya-Dravidan by culture, language and genetics. We've no need for Dravidan politics.
Do we keep our identity? Oh you bet! Malayalam is the only official language for us with even English being thrown out.
We stay different from North in politics in every single way.

We're also probably the only major state that celebrates Deepawali without all the stupid bang bang and with just simple deepams in temples and prayers.
Our main festival Onam triggers RSS because it celebrates an Asuran.

These are just some examples of our separate identity.
Do we ask another country because of it?
No. Even though South India is incredibly richer and North drains us, we've our needs with the North. We realise that we're stronger together.

.
They had they opportunity in 1947 - i.e Dravidistan - but missed it as they can never racially or culturally align with Tamils.

All south Indian states align with India and view Tamils with disdain. Tamilandu has been only odd state in south India, due to its strong Tamil (Dravidian) racial, political and cultural identity.

Kannadigas defacing Tamil Hindu Temple's signboard

recently Andhra police killed a few Tamil labourers (not the 1st incident), this will never happen to non Tamils in the south Indian states i.e AP, Karnataka, Kerala

2 yrs back 20 Tamils shot by Andhra Police
