Nepal-India joint military exercise commences in Indias hilly state
A Nepal-India joint military training began at Pithoragarh of Indias Uttarakhand state from Monday.
An infantry battalion of the Nepal Army (NA) and an equivalent strength from the Indian Army is participating in the joint military exercise titled Exercise Surya Kiran-V, it is learnt.
The NA Directorate of Public Relations (DPR) confirmed the commencement of the joint military exercise, but said full details of the battalion-level training would be made public only on Friday.
The two-week long joint exercise will focus on mountain warfare and will also include anti-insurgency operations in hilly terrains and relief and rescue operations at the time of natural disasters. NA personnel would also be sharing their experiences gained during the conduct of counter insurgency operations with their Indian counterparts, according to media reports.
Over 900 Indian and Nepali troops are taking part in this exercise being conducted in mountainous terrains of the area shared by the geography of both the countries in this part of Indo-Nepal border, Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted an an Indian army spokesman as saying.
He said the exercise would prove to be another link of cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Gaurav Shumsher JB Rana is scheduled to attend the concluding ceremony of the two week-long joint military exercise.
The joint military exercise between the two countries had commenced in 2011.
However, the latest joint military training has begun amidst report that Nepals Defence Ministry has raised concerns over NA training foreign soldiers in its High Altitude and Mountain Warfare School citing Chinas security concerns
