Even as Nepal today asked all 34 countries involved in rescue work to call off their operations, the Indian Army continued to provide aid to people affected by the April 25 killer quake in close coordination with the Nepalese Army.

Nepalese authorities today requested all the 34 countries involved in rescue operations to call off their work but requested India to move to the next phase -- reconstruction and rehabilitation.

A Defence spokesman here said the Army Aviation Advanced Light Helicopters(ALH) conducted 12 sorties yesterday and evacuated 41 casualties apart from delivering 4.3 tonnes of relief material to inaccessible areas.

The Indian Army Medical Teams treated 273 patients out of which 34 surgeries were performed and 20 patients were admitted to administer medical care.

One IL 76 with 4.6 tonnes of essential Medicines and medical stores, including oxygen tanks for replenishing the Indian Army Field Hospitals and Medical Teams arrived in Kathmandu today.

The three Indian Army Engineer Task Forces (ETF) presently located at Barpak, Basantpur and Nikoshera, are involved in providing access and opening roads to establish road communication and have cleared approximately 80 meters track using skid steers and JCB.

The ETFs are involved in clearance of collapsed buildings and debris and have been able to clear approximately 80 cubic meters of debris in close cooperation with Nepal authorities. They are also providing assistance to the local population in repairing houses. One IL 76 with engineering equipment is being sent to Kathmandu today.

The second convoy from Kanpur with relief stores comprising 2,020 blankets and 256 tents is also likely to reach Nepal later today.

I'll wait for a more reliable source. I find it hard to believe that Nepal asked nations to stop rescue and recovery efforts, especially with the wide scale casualties.

Bodies still need to be pulled out from the rubble, so that the loved ones can be reunited, and the ground can be cleared for reconstruction efforts.

Anyway, I'm still going to wait for a more reliable source of information.

Okay then, it seems odd that they would. I suppose they have their reasons.

Probably some political motivation and assurances from India. No country in it's right mind would tell countries of the world except one to help it through a natural disaster. It would be highly unwise.

Especially since Nepal is a mountainous country and distributions and rescue would be slow resources spread out.

Maybe they requested the withdrawal of all foreign military personnel

That might make more sense. But that would be hard wouldn't it? It's usually the military that does this kind of work. For example it was the US military helping out during Pakistan's flood a few years ago.
