Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered to probe the huge payments made by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government to US lobbying firms on Friday.

The previous government of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had paid huge amounts of money to US firms for lobbying.

The firms lobbied for the PML-N supremo and his government and carried out a number of surveys which depict the performance and popularity of his government above than other political parties.

Sources relayed that the prime minister directed concerned officers to submit the record of amounts paid to the US companies. He has also decided to conduct an audit of the expenses spent over Pakistan’s cases overseas during PML-N’s tenure.

The officials have also been told to provide details of the payments and the list of the lawyers who pleaded cases for Pakistan in the previous government tenure.

It is to worth mentioning here that former prime minister Benazir Bhutto had also paid US lobbying firms to come back and convinced Pervez Musharraf for NRO.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has taken notice of foreign companies being paid through the national exchequer to lobby for the previous government.

He ordered on Friday an audit of the payments made to such companies from the national exchequer.

He wants to know how much money went to these foreign companies – located in the UK and the US — and what exactly the companies did.

The PML-N government, and more notably former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, is accused of approaching companies to lobby for it. What PM Khan wants to know is whether the companies lobbied for the PML-N government abroad or within Pakistan.

The companies provided clients with access to social media data.

The premier has summoned the details of these transactions, such as the amount of money paid, who hired the companies and the reasons for lobbying.

He wants a report on the matter to be submitted soon.
