Nawaz Sharif wants Pakistan's military dictators to be made accountable

Former premier and PML(N) chief Nawaz Sharif today demanded that all military dictators should be made accountable for subverting Pakistan's constitution.

Addressing a function organised in Lahore to mark the main opposition PML(N)’s foundation day, he said Pakistan cannot afford another spell of martial law as enough damage had been done to the country by past military regimes.

"Bangladesh came into being because of army rule in Pakistan," he thundered as hundreds of party workers cheered him on.

Pakistan was not created for any establishment that comes to power through "guns" and by subverting the constitution, he said.

"During my term as prime minister, we made the country's defence strong by conducting nuclear tests and we forced neighbouring India's premier to come to Lahore and extend a hand of friendship to Pakistan," he said, as he listed the past achievements of the PML(N).

The two-time former premier said after the US pulls its troops out of Afghanistan, Pakistan wants "a friendly Afghanistan and not an Afghanistan which is under Pakistan".

Sharif called on the Pakistan People's Party-led government to pay attention to the unrest in Balochistan province, saying the country cannot afford another Bangladesh-like situation there.

Referring to the current political situation, Sharif said the PML(N) will not become part of the "puppet show" and will make its decisions independently.

Funny because Sharif himself is a product of an infamous dictator. Mard e Momin, Mard e Haq, 5 star General Zia Ul Haq Shaheed (observes a minutes silence) chose Sharif as the finance minister during his tenure initiating his political career.

Then through ISI, Sharif was developed to counter Bhutto who was seen as a thorn in the eyes of the military led establishment.

What he says is true but he must realise that politicians too had a big role in our predicaments that haunt us to this day.

Well Nawaz Sharif, you're not helping the situation by somewhat giving a greenlight to the anti-national activities of the Bugti's with your direct support to them.

As your favourite 'military dictator' said recently:

“They (Shahzain and his father Talal Bugti) get state protocol, when they come to Punjab and stay at Raiwind House as guests. Nawaz is supporting them just for his political mileage.” ​

That doesn't seem quite right. Especially when the likes of Shahzain is caught leading convoys of illegal arms (as recorded recently).

Still, blaming individual generals isn't enough. It may not even be necessary. It is the system that is at fault as well as individuals, and the system that must be changed to promote accountability. If you just chop off the head of a general here or there the faults of the system will remain unchanged.

A true democratic statesman would probably seek this compromise: personal immunity for the past crimes of generals and their collaborators in the legislature in exchange for true reform of the military and government, as Chile deposed Pinochet from power. A demogogue, on the other hand, would just seek to cut off heads in order to gain power. At times like this, the ordinary citizen can make a big difference, as the "people power" movements in the Philippines have demonstrated.

he has a lot of business interest in India mate.. he is basically a Bunya.. no insult intended.. but he loves his money..and any conflict with India doesnt suit him. specially during Krgil conflict he was having sleepless nights that Indiawill confiscate his investments.

he might say few things to appease Jamiat Islami and other religious fanatics but in his heart he is a true Asian version of a free mason.

as pointed out by T Faz.. he is a product of one of our most ruthless dictators, Gen Zia so he is very much greatful to that late General, his point of target is only Musharraf.. if he has his way he will make exclusive legistlation/ fatwa and punishments against Musharraf.

Actually, they do! And the Philippines has been fighting them far longer than Pakistan has.

But if there is one thing I've learned here is that Pakistanis endlessly rationalize reasons for continuing to do nothing to change the flow of things. It is a lack of civic courage - the willingness to stand forward and strive against others for democratic leadership by offering a different course of action. Why is that? Are you afraid somebody is going to arrest you out of the blue, or slit your throat, or threaten your family? Or are Pakistanis here at PDF still wedded to a tribal or feudal mentality?
