NATO Air Raids Killed More Than 50 Civilians: Karzai

President Hamid Karzai today accused NATO troops of killing more than 50 civilians in a troubled province of eastern Afghanistan, as international troops pledged to probe the allegations.

Karzai's statement followed comments by Fazilullah Wahidi, provincial governor of Kunar province, alleging US-led NATO forces had killed up to 63 people, including women and children in airstrikes on suspected rebels.

Citing information from Afghanistan's spy agency and local officials Karzai said, "About 50 civilians have been martyred during international military forces operations in Ghaziabad district in Kunar province."

Adding that he "strongly condemns" the deaths, Karzai pledged to send investigators to the remote district.

Wahidi earlier told AFP that most of the dead were civilians including 20 women, three elderly men and a number of children.

They were killed mostly in air raids by the ISAF against suspected rebels in Kunar province's Ghaziabad district, a remote mountainous region at the feet of the Hindu Kush ranges, he added.

Civilian casualties caused by foreign forces are extremely sensitive in Afghanistan, where about 140,000 US-led foreign and Afghan troops are waging a counterinsurgency campaign to tackle a nearly 10-year Taliban-led insurgency.

NATO said today that it would also investigate the allegations and confirmed an ongoing operation in the restive area, but said as many as 36 insurgents had been killed.

"We are conducting an immediate assessment of these allegations and will report our findings," said US Army Colonel Patrick Hynes in a statement.

"ISAF reporting and weapons system video shows 36 insurgents, who were carrying weapons, were killed. This operation took place in a very remote valley in Kunar province, over very rugged terrain in the late night/early morning hours," the statement added.

A human rights watchdog said earlier this month that 2010 was the deadliest year for ordinary Afghans since the US-led invasion of 2001, with more than 2,400 civilians killed.

Taliban and other insurgents were responsible for more than 60 per cent of the dead, the report by the Afghanistan Rights Monitor said, blaming the US-led force for 21 per cent of the casualties.

A limited withdrawal of foreign forces is expected to start from more stable provinces of Afghanistan from July.

But in the latest major attack to strike the country, a Taliban assault on a bank in eastern Afghanistan killed 38 people and wounded more than 70 others, officials said today.

SUSPECT REBELS:
If there one ISAF soldier killed then they killed a whole street of innocent men, women in response and showed that we were attacked and in response we killed a lot of rebels.

Attackers got success to escape but innocent paid for their messes. Meanwhile these are attackers whose families killed over no reasons in house by ISAF aggressors.

21% Casualties
are cause to produce more resisters, fighters for Afghan sovereignty. And cause of more casualties and more in response fighters.

Afghan probe says Nato killed dozens of Kunar civilians

Afghan government investigators have told the BBC that 65 civilians, including 50 women and children, were killed in a Nato operation last week.

But the Nato force, Isaf, says its initial findings show that no civilians were killed in Kunar province.

It said more than 30 insurgents died in an overnight raid in the area.

On Sunday, the provincial governor said civilians had been killed in recent Nato-led air strikes in a remote mountainous district.

Afghans - from President Hamid Karzai down - believe that in Kunar province, indiscriminate Nato firepower killed 20 women, 29 children, and more than a dozen unarmed men.
'Propaganda'

Nato believes there was not a single civilian casualty from its operation in Kunar.

It says that pro-Taliban villagers have created a propaganda story that was taken up by politicians in Kabul eager to prove their nationalist credentials.

The incident happened a week ago in a mountainous and sparsely populated area of the country.

Nato was carrying out a three-day offensive against Taliban fighters, using Apache attack helicopters equipped with 30-mm cannon Hellfire missiles.

The key battle was fought over a five-hour period, at night, in rugged terrain.

No video or photographs have yet emerged either of the operation or, crucially, of any bodies.

But the head of the Afghan investigation team said that victims were burned beyond recognition and buried in a mass grave.

One man from the village said that people were killed after they fled, terrified, from their homes.

He was speaking from the nearest hospital where people were being treated apparently for burns.

Some Nato officers believe that village elders may have burned the hands and feet of children and sent them to hospital to create the impression of an incident involving civilians - adding to pressure to halt the operation.

It is claimed that this suggestion was repeated in a meeting between the Nato commander, General David Petreaus, and President Karzai this week.

The president's spokesman called it "outrageous, insulting and racist".

This is not my opinion but I have read Afghans expressing this sentiment: The Taliban are fellow Afghan freedom fighters. NATO troops are foreign invaders.
