Hi guys, here’s a not-to-be-missed video on the National Defence Academy, Pune. It gives an insight into the only Academy in the world that gives combined basic training to 1800 cadets of the Army, Navy and Air Force every year. This one is especially for those who haven’t had the opportunity of seeing what it’s like in there.

This is the place where boys become men! It takes three years to achieve that, but then there’s one more year of advanced training in respective defence establishments after graduating from the NDA before one finally becomes a commissioned officer.

Yes! It’s an unforgettable three years!

Here it is. The anchor is none other than Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, Ashok Chakra, Hero of the Soviet Union, now retired and the first Indian cosmonaut to ride into space, who is a neighbor and a close friend of mine.

Enjoy!

I can't watch the video as Youtube is banned in Pakistan but I read up on the Academy, is there a specific reason as to why the training takes 3 years before one more at that specific Arm's institution? Dehradhun clears a course in two years with the same Bachelor's degree, is there a particular course that takes up the third year at NDA?
Thanks in Advance,

Got it from the video - first two years is an all forces combined training and the third year is specific training of the wing the cadet chooses to take up.

Cadets join the NDA after school, at the end of the NDA training they are awarded Graduation Degrees based on the streams of education they underwent while on training - it is at par with the three years Graduation courses in Universities.

This is as far as the academics part of the institution is. As mentioned above, the 1st two years training is common to all three services , the last year is Service specific - an excellent way to foster inter Service cooperation starting at grass root level .

For joining The IMA / equivalent institutions Graduation is a pre qualification.

The Sudan Block.

In 1941, Lord Linlithgow, then Governor-General of India received a gift of a hundred thousand pounds from a grateful Sudanese Government towards building a war memorial in recognition of the sacrifices of Indian troops in the liberation of Sudan in the East African Campaign during World War II. At the end of the war, Field Marshal Claude Auchinleck, then Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, drawing on experiences of the army during the war, led a committee to study various Military academies around the world and submitted a report to the Government of India in December 1946. The committee recommended the establishment of a Joint Services Military Academy, with training modeled on the United States Military Academy at West Point.

After the independence of India in August 1947, the Auchinleck Report was taken up by the Chiefs of Staff Committee in India, which immediately implemented the recommendations. The committee initiated an action plan in late 1947 to commission a permanent defence academy and began the search for a site to build the academy. They also decided to set up an interim training academy, known as the Joint Services Wing (JSW), which was commissioned on 1 January 1949 at the Armed Forces Academy (now known as the Indian Military Academy) in Dehradun. Initially, after two years of training at the JSW, Army cadets went on to the Military wing of the AFA for a further two-year pre-commission training, while the Navy and Air Force cadets were sent to Dartmouth and Cranwell in the United Kingdom for further training.

Following the partition, India's share of the monetary gift received from Sudan, amounted to £ 70,000 (the remaining £ 30,000 of the gift went to Pakistan). The Indian Army decided to use these funds to partly cover the cost of construction of the NDA. The foundation stone for the academy was laid by then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru on 6 October 1949. The National Defence Academy was formally commissioned on 7 December 1954, with an inauguration ceremony held on 16 January 1955.

Oh heck! It's sad you can't get this fantastic video in Pakistan! I wonder why?

In addition to what Third Eye has already mentioned the three years at the NDA are divided into 6 terms of 6 months each. Combined training is for the first 4 terms. The last two terms are for proprietary training for the Army, Navy, and Air Force cadets.

After passing out from NDA the cadets have to join their respective training establishments for one year of specialized training before they are commissioned as officers. For example, Army cadets are sent to the IMA (Indian Military Academy, Dehradun) for 1 year (2 terms).

However, there is another entry called ‘Direct Entry’ wherein graduates join the IMA directly but have to undergo training for 2 years (4 terms) before they are commissioned.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
