President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday led the nation in paying tributes to first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 127th birth anniversary.

While homage was paid to Nehru at his memorial Shantivan by Mr. Mukherjee and Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan led Parliamentarians in paying floral tributes at Nehru’s portrait in Central Hall of Parliament.

“Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary,” Mr. Modi said in a tweet.

Besides Mr. Mukherjee and Mr. Ansari, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi’s former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit paid floral tributes at Shantivan.

The leaders also released tricolour balloons amid playing of bands and singing of patriotic songs by school children.

In Parliament’s Central Hall, Ms. Mahajan and Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, M. Venkaiah Naidu, Ananth Kumar and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi paid floral tributes to Nehru.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and former Deputy Prime Minister and Chairperson, Ethics Committee, L.K. Advani, several MPs, former parliamentarians, Secretaries-General of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Anoop Mishra and Shumsher K. Sheriff respectively were also present.

A booklet containing the profile of Nehru, brought out in Hindi and English by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, was presented to the dignitaries.

The portrait of Nehru was unveiled by the then President S. Radhakrishnan, in Central Hall on May 5, 1966.

Nehru was born to Motilal Nehru and Swaroop Rani on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh and his birthday is celebrated as Children’s Day. He remained in office until his death in 1964

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ramnath Kovind were among the host of leaders who paid tributes to India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary.

Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu on Twitter said, “Wish the nation on the occasion of Birth Anniversary of first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, today. Also wish all the children on the happy occasion of Children’s Day, today.”

In his Mann ki Baat on October 30, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had felicitated children and added, “Children are the emerging heroes in the creation of new India.” Today, Modi offered tributes to Nehru on his birth anniversary.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh and former president Pranab Mukherjere also paid tributes to India’s first prime minister. Pranab Mukherjee tweeted, “Under the inspiration of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Ji created a conducive atmosphere for the establishment of independent institutions which strengthened our parliamentary democracy. He shall always be our guiding star.”

“My respectful tributes to the great son of India and our First PM Pt. #JawaharlalNehru on his Jayanti. Ensuring Human Rights & Liberties to citizens will be the rightful homage to this charismatic leader and maker of Modern India,” Mukherjee said

Similarly, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wished children saying, “Lots of blessings and love to children on Children’s Day.”

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also said, “Today, India celebrates the birth anniversary of our first Prime Minister, Pandit #JawaharlalNehru. On this day, we also commemorate his love for children & vision to empower them with opportunities. His legacy continues to inspire us to build a better future for our children.”

Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu also tweeted, “Children are the future of our nation.We must work to nurture them, give them opportunities to excel. My greetings on the occasion of #ChildrensDay.”

Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor said, “Happy Children’s Day to the children in our lives — & the child in all of us!”

President of India presents National Child Awards

The President of India, Shri Ram NathKovind, presented the National Child Awards today (November 14, 2017) at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of Children’s Day.

The National Child Awards include the National Child Awards for Exceptional Achievement that give recognition to children with exceptional abilities and outstanding achievements in the fields of innovation, scholastic achievements, sports, arts, culture, social service and music; National Awards for Child Welfare to institutions and individuals for their outstanding work in the field of child welfare; and the Rajiv Gandhi ManavSeva Awards to individuals for their outstanding contribution towards service for children.

In a message sent to the Ministry of Women and Child Development on the occasion of the Children’s Day, the President said, “Children are the future of our country. We must make every effort to ensure their welfare. We should also make all possible efforts to ensure that children in our country have a safe and happy childhood. Every child is a bud waiting to blossom. By awarding children, we recognise and encourage their talent and potential for nation building. We should also recognise the significant contribution of individuals and institutions who work for causes related to children.”

Later in the day, the President celebrated Children’s Day with students/children from various schools/institutions at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
