NA debates governors rule, Lahore attacks
* PML-N says government did not pay heed to agencies warnings
* PML-Q says it is not interested to join either PPP or PML-N
By Irfan Ghauri
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government on Tuesday came under fire in the National Assembly (NA) as the opposition and its allied parliamentarians from FATA castigated it for imposing governors rule in Punjab and the terrorist attack in Lahore.
The Lower House continued debate on the political situation in the country after the imposition of governors rule in Punjab, with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) continuing its aggressive stance.
The party later boycotted the NA proceedings after a speech by Khwaja Asif on a point of order.
Asif criticised the PPP for its dream to conqueror Punjab at the behest of one man.
He said the situation in the country would further deteriorate in the coming days and warned that that would lead to the winding up of the democratic system.
Warnings: Asif claimed that the intelligence agencies had warned the government against a possible terrorist threat to the Sri Lankan cricket team, which the government did not pay heed to.
PML-Quaid senior leader Faisal Saleh Hayat said the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team would have far reaching consequences for the country.
He said he had been informed as president of Pakistan Football Federation that an upcoming international football tournament had been cancelled, as foreign international teams had declined to visit the country following Tuesdays terror attacks.
Intentions: Hayat criticised both the PPP and the PML-N for the current political turmoil, saying the PML-Q had no intention to join any of the two parties to form government in Punjab. He said his party wanted the two parties to complete their five-year term as per the peoples mandate.
FATA Parliamentary Leader Munir Orakzai criticised the imposition of governors rule in Punjab, saying the disqualification of former Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif was unjustified. He said a delegation of FATA representatives would meet Shahbaz on March 5 in an effort to defuse current tensions. He supported the Swat peace deal and demanded the government strike a similar deal in FATA to restore peace in the area.
