Aizawl: Altogether 1,240 refugees entered Mizoram from bordering Myanmar recently, fearing reprisal following encounters between the Myanmar army and rebel group, Arakan Army, police said.
The refugees entered Lawngtlai district in the southern end of the state after an exchange of fire between the army and the militants intensified near the border in the past couple of days.
The police said there has been no increase in the number of refugees entering the state till Monday.
Many families, including women and children, seeking safety, crossed the border and settled in various places in Lawngtlai.
Mizoram home minister R. Lalzirliana said officials from Lawngtlai sub-divisional office and block development officers were sent to enquire about the refugees soon after the administration was informed. Chief minister Lal Thanhawla has briefed external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj about the refugees. The Union minister told the chief minister to look after the refugees and let them stay in Mizoram, he added.
"These refugees are not Rohingya Muslims but one of the Mizo communities who live in Myanmar," he added.
Around 420 refugees have settled in Zochachhuah, 500 in Laitlang, 120 in Dumzautlang and 200 in Hmawngchhuah villages across the district, the police said during their visit to Lawngtlai on Friday.
Lawngtlai deputy commissioner Arun T. said a meeting was held on Sunday to provide food, shelter and medicines to the refugees.
"It is difficult to reach the remote villages, where these refugees have settled, from the district headquarters. The refugees are residing in community halls and school buildings. Assam Rifles personnel are guarding them," he added.
The Assam Rifles in Mizoram and the Light Infantry Regiments of the Myanmar army are having a "coordinated boat patrolling" since Friday along the border areas. Starting from boundary pillar no. 28, the coordinating forces went 90km along the border and ended in Zokhawthar, a village near the border in the eastern end of the state on Saturday.
The Arakan Army is a Rakhine insurgent group in Myanmar. It is the armed wing of the United League of Arakan (ULA), founded in April 2009.
