Myanmar may not accept hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslim refugees who fled to Bangladesh from the Rakhine state of Myanmar.

Myanmar's junta leader Min Aung Hlaing gave the indication in his first interview since taking power in a coup on February 1 this year.

Min Aung Hlaing was asked by Chinese-language Phoenix television whether the Muslims could be allowed back to Rakhine State - from where most fled an army crackdown in 2017 that UN investigators said had "genocidal intent".

"If it doesn't comply with Myanmar's laws, what else is there to consider? I don't believe there is any country in the world that would go beyond their own country's refugee laws to accept refugees," Min Aung Hlaing responded, according to a transcript of the interview.
When asked whether that meant vocal international appeals on behalf of the Rohingya were to no avail, he nodded.

Min Aung Hlaing, who headed the army in 2017 when some 700,000 Rohingya fled from advancing troops, reiterated the view of nationalists in Buddhist-majority Myanmar that the Rohingya are not one of its ethnic groups.
He said the term Rohingya had only emerged since independence from Britain in 1948.

"After we gained our independence, the census also registered the words 'Bengali', 'Pakistani' and 'Chittagong', but never the word 'Rohingya', thus we never accepted it," Min Aung Hlaing said.

Rohingya have been widely referred to as Bengali by Myanmar authorities - implying that they are outsiders from Bangladesh, although some can trace their roots in Myanmar back for centuries.

Myanmar's elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was overthrown by Min Aung Hlaing on Feb. 1, had also come under international criticism for defending the army against charges of genocide relating to the Rohingya.

She and the military rejected accusations of genocide saying the security forces were engaged in legitimate operations against Rohingya insurgents when the refugees fled to Bangladesh.

Not long after the coup, Min Aung Hlaing said efforts to repatriate refugees from Bangladesh would continue, but there has been no sign of progress while the junta has struggled to impose control in Myanmar.

Bangladesh is keen to see the Rohingya go back to Myanmar from the huge camps in which most of them are living in southeastern Bangladeshi border districts.

Some media on Monday reported that efforts were underway to restart talks on the repatriation between Bangladesh and Myanmar with the help of China.

Rest assured, whatever the general is speaking has been coached by China, possibly an effect of the recent Quad fiasco.

its the ooposite actually, 1 month ago the chinese ambassador said that there was no progress with the negotiations (that were mediated by china) because the junta would not come to the negotiating table.

BD pivoting to US is not a bad thing in my opinion. China can not assume that they can support the burmese and keep BD in their fold.

BD needs US for our economy and the alignment is natural at least for a short while. In the long run as US power wanes BD can pivot away.

But BD must stand firm against China. No one respects a pushover. I am against public pronouncements.... actions speaks far more.

if they can't put a leash on their rabid dog, what else can be done ?

Responding to a question, the Chinese Ambassador said that China could not contact with the Myanmar government on the Rohingya repatriation issue as the situation in Myanmar is not normal now.

“We see no possibility of resuming the tri-patriate talks in near future,
” the Ambassador said referring to the ongoing violent situation in Myanmar following the takeover of power by Myanmar military.

Asking China for all the consumer goods, planes, tanks, all other weapons, development loans, engineering contractors and the list goes on.

In such a weak position, BD may purchase military items from the USA but it should not be tied to its relationship with QUAD. For BD, QUAD means Indian hegemony. Once BD chooses QUAD, it is the starting of the demise of this country.

Look at the map. QUAD is invalid in this region unless BD allows IA troops, logistics and provisions to go through its land. So, this is how BD loses its sovereignty to become another Bhutan or even Sikkim.

People should be vigilant against cheap ego.

QUAD is a wannabe Asian NATO lol , BD needs to chill out and stay the fk out and maintain relations with the West and China and stay neutral as possible.

BD can't afford to lose or waste time

Yeah can't really fault our FM for taking the stance he has taken.

At the end of the day, we must support our own interests. China would too.

it's a matter of national security.
. Burmese have been taking advantage of our peaceful stance. Military capabilities need to be built up.
A strong defence policy will deter Burma from doing anything stupid.

if they cant put a leash on burma we will be left with no choice but to.....

Well fam Bangladesh in the coming years will have to deal with a more hostile Burma after this Covid thing gets under control. We aren't even industrialized or even economically prepared to deal with a war if we really have to teach Burma a lesson.

We still don't have any air superiority nor any true naval supremacy , this SUCKS

What sucks even more is that Bangladesh is being pulled by the West while being pulled by China simultaneously like a tug of war , god for bid we choose one or the other and don't stay neutral then we can say goodbye to development.

what if i told you that BD can deal with Burma without firing a single shot or without even buying fighters or expensive equipment? Would you believe me ?
Cost-effective way to deal with them is to fund , arm and train Ethnic Armed Organisations (EAOs) of burma not the Rohingya.
create chaos and shut our border. now is the perfect time , they are on fire rn.

Everything under Heaven is in utter chaos , the situation is perfect
