Myanmar has lost the support of nine countries of Africa and the Pacific on the issue of human rights of Rohingya and other minorities in the South Asian nation. These countries have changed their vote from 'abstention' to 'yes' on a proposal at the plenary session of UN General Assembly on Thursday night.

These nine countries are Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Tanzania, Palau and Solomon Islands. They abstained from voting on the proposals at the UN General Assembly in 2019.

The development on Saturday came from diplomatic sources in New York, the Facebook page of Myanmar’s foreign ministry and a Twitter account of an Annan Commission member.
Other than Myanmar, countries voting against the proposal on Thursday were China, Russia, Belarus, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam and Zimbabwe
Other than Myanmar, countries voting against the proposal on Thursday were China, Russia, Belarus, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. Twenty-five countries including three in South Asia – India, Sri Lanka and Nepal as well as Japan - absented from voting.

Last November, the European Union (EU) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) placed the proposal at the UN’s third committee, highlighting the interim order of International Court of Justice (ICJ), investigation of International Criminal Court (ICC) and Myanmar’s continuous depriving the Rohingya and the other minority groups of rights including elections.

The proposal emphasised a number of measures Myanmar must take including citizenship for Rohingyas and creation of conductive environment for their repatriation.
Myanmar foreign ministry said the proposal taken to the third committee on Thursday has been decided at the 48th plenary session of the 75th UN General Assembly (UNGA 75). Myanmar called for a vote before the plenary session’s decision.

Dutch Ambassador and member of Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, known as the Annan Commission, Laetitia van den Assum, tweeted on Friday, “On 31 Dec the UNGA plenary finally adopted its resolution on #Myanmar and the human rights situation of Rohingya and other minorities by 130 in favour to 9 against, with 25 abstentions.”

“Adoption of the resolution had been delayed over budgetary questions about the Myanmar investigation mechanism (IIMM) and other issues,” she further tweeted.

As expected, the Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations, Kyaw Moe Tun, opposed the proposal saying the consequence of creating political pressure over the Rakhain situation will not bring any good. Citing the move illogical, he said Myanmar will not tolerate the abuse of the UN power on human rights issues and creating pressure on the country. Rejecting the proposal, he said it will not solve crisis in the Rakhine state.

The EU-OIC proposal, however, highly praised the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for setting a humanitarian precedence by sheltering and protecting the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen on Sunday said Dhaka is happy with the result of United Nations (UN) resolution on Rohingyas and Bangladesh sees it as its diplomatic success.

“We’re happy with the results,” he told newspersons at his office terming it as a success for Bangladesh as 132 countries voted in favour of the resolution.

China, Russia, Belarus, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam and Zimbabwe stood beside Myanmar while India and Japan refrained from voting the draft resolution on the situation of human rights of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar which was adopted by the UN General Assembly.

The foreign minister said Dhaka has no displeasure against the countries which abstained from voting in the UN resolution as well as voted against it saying it is a “strategic” decision.
A total of 26 countries, including India, Japan, Sri Lanka and Singapore abstained from voting on the resolution on the situation of human rights of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar
“Those countries could play a better role which voted against the resolution. We don’t have any displeasure against them,” he said.

The resolution was placed before the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations on Thursday.

Momen said the countries that wanted to remain neutral in the UN to use their leverage on Myanmar in finding the solution, talked to Bangladesh before taking their decision. “We are happy about that.”

The foreign minister further said Rohingya issue remains a big challenge and expressed his expectation over resumption of the repatriation process in this year.

“I’ve conveyed to my counterpart in Myanmar that we want the (repatriation) process to start,” he said.

Saying that a conducive environment for voluntary repatriation has to be in place as promised, Momen said Bangladesh expects that Myanmar will keep its word in the New Year.

Bangladesh is hosting over 1.1 million forcefully displaced Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar district and most of them arrived there since 25 August 2017 after a military crackdown by Myanmar, which the UN called a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing” and “genocide” by other rights groups.

Bangladesh and Myanmar signed the repatriation deal on 23 November 2017. On 16 January 2018, Bangladesh and Myanmar signed a document on “Physical Arrangement”, which was supposed to facilitate the return of Rohingyas to their homeland.

Myanmar did not take back a single Rohingya from Bangladesh over the last three years while the attempts of repatriation failed twice.

Incompetent crook should hang himself. Those 9 countries mean nothing in UN, I might as well make my own pseudo country “corleoneistan” and refrain from voting myanmar, it means nothing.

Myanmar should be careful. Just look on Iran, after Iran get UN sanction their GDP stagnant in 2012 level for another 8 years. Dont say there is China bla bla. Even Iran get supported by both China and India but still get stagnant GDP for 8 years since UN sanction is imposed.

Better they embrace those Rohingya and can have good economic growth due to US and Western support. Myanmar after becoming democratic actually can become another Western darling. It is so fool to kick that Rohingya from their country. We are already living in a modern world, not a medieval era anymore where such thing can be done without getting any consequence.

Japan and India.

This is embarrassing to say the least.

You should read about how Bangladesh is being touted as the next potential ISIS hotspot.

Why would you do this?

Learn from Pakistan, it never uses refugees or illegal migrants this way.

armed struggles work if your group is 20% or more. ethnic groups less than 10% of the population have zero chance unless the geography or external environment is favaroble.
Rohyngas are less than 2% of Myanmar's population

What you say is true in general

China and India balanced their relationship with Saudis and West when it came to Iran. Plus Iran's mullahs never miss a chance to interfere outside their country. Myanmar's rulers keep their shit within their country. Myanmar has geography that India, China and USA will find useful in regional geopolitics.
