NEW DELHI: Myanmar has deployed an additional brigade comprising around 6,000 men and officers along the border with India, apparently to prevent any more surgical strikes by the Indian army inside its territory.

The brigade has been deployed in addition to five already posted along the 1,643 km-long Indo-Myanmar border, a senior government official said.

The additional deployment has been apparently made to prevent Indian army commandos from carrying out any more attacks on the camps of northeastern insurgent groups based in the neighbouring country like they did on June 9, the official said quoting intelligence inputs.

Myanmar was upset with India after a crack team of about 70 commandos of the Indian army, equipped with assault rifles, rocket launchers, grenades and night vision goggles, was airdropped from helicopters and they attacked two camps being run by NSCN-K and KYKL militants inside that country.

The operation was carried out after the Naga militants killed 18 soldiers in an ambush in Chandel area of Manipur on June 4.

Days after the attack, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had visited Nay Pyi Taw and briefed Myanmarese leadership, which was upset over the operation conducted by Indian troops on their territory. He had explained New Delhi's position vis-a-vis the militant groups, which were involved in subversive activities in the Northeast, the official said.

Myanmar was believed to have conveyed its displeasure to India during the Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) meeting held here on July 16. The meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Myanmarese counterpart U Wunna Maung Lwin.

"It is clear that they didn't take kindly the way we carried out the operation. It was reflected in discussions," the official said.

According to an estimate of security agencies, there are around 60 camps of Northeast insurgent groups like NSCN-K, KYKL, PLA of Manipur, ULFA and NDFB of Assam in Myanmar.

NSCN-K chief S S Khaplang is a Myanmarese Naga who operates out of Taga, a border town of the neighbouring country.

. . . .
As Myanmar is a friendly country Military operation was carried out but otherwise option of RAW is always available.

.
Myanmar should not try anything stupid, confronting Indian troops will have grave consequences for them.

.
Good to see Myanmar defending their territory from the Indian bully.

.
Assessment is incorrect.

The additional brigade is deployed to seal the borders. It has come just after Myanmar Military Chief visited India. India requested more security on the Myanmar side of the border.

.
Meh,just posturing to get some concessions from India (money!!)The border is as porous as ever and Myanmar has little interest or benefit in taking out the Nagas when umpteen armed groups are there to deal.

Myanmar agrees to Indian hot pursuit | idrw.org
In a significant development, Myanmar has agreed to allow the Indian Army to cross the international border into its territory in hot pursuit of insurgents but set the precondition that Myanmarese citizens should not be harmed.

Disclosing that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the current commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Army, had a meeting with Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday at which national security adviser Ajit Doval and Joint Intelligence Committee chairman R.N. Ravi were also present, authoritative security sources told this newspaper that Myanmar has also agreed to deploy additional troops along the border with India to strengthen border security.

Indicating that the development was significant, security sources said Myanmar has assured it will help India drive out anti-India forces from Myanmarese territory.

This development is also seen as a major breakthrough in view of recent attacks on Indian security forces in the Northeast and the cross-border raid conducted by Indian Special Forces on camps run by the Khaplang faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) and other Northeast insurgent groups.

Informing that the Myanmar Army Chief also met Indian Army Chief Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag, security sources said the Indian Army has agreed to facilitate training of Myanmar Army officers in India.

Pointing out that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing was briefed about the ongoing activities of Indian insurgent groups inside their territory, security sources said the Indian security establishment also shared crucial intelligence inputs about the activities of Indian insurgent groups in Myanmar.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing was scheduled to meet the defence secretary, security sources said, adding that he is also scheduled to hold a meeting at the headquarters of the Indian Army’s 3 Corps at Rangapahar, in Dimapur, after visiting Bodh Gaya.
