Mustafa and Qaimkhani frozen out by the MQM – Asian Echo :British Asian News,Entertainments,Gossips,Lifestyle and sports

DUBAI: Former Mayor of Karachi and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s senior leader Syed Mustafa Kamal and former Deputy Convener of the Co-ordination Committee of the MQM Anis Qaimkhani have developed serious differences with the party and both have fled Karachi until the party leaders forgives them, The Asian Echo has learnt from some sources.

It can be exclusively revealed that former Karachi Mayor Mustafa Kamal has been living between Dubai and America – refusing requests to return to Karachi. Pakistan’s major English newspaper The News reported on Tuesday that Kamal now works for Malik Riaz in Dubai but that’s only a cover and the actual story is something else. Pakistani TV Geo had reported that Babar Ghauri has denied in Washington that Kamal has differences with the party.

Former mayor of Karachi and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s senior leader Syed Mustafa Kamal is in Dubai and working with Malik Riaz’s Bahria Town, it is learnt. He will supervise a Bahria Town project, if approved by the Dubai government. He will then stay put in Dubai.

“It’s the insulting behaviour and unjustified criticism by the party leadership that has disheartened Mustafa Kamal bhai to the point that he is staying away from Karachi and not involved in the party anymore. He is refusing to be in touch with the party and feels that he has been very unfairly treated,” a source , pleading complete anonymity, confided.

He said that kamal refused to return to Karachi and he has handed over his resignation from the Senate seat to the party but that’s not being made public at this stage. The ultimate aim is to get the new recruit and made a senator at Kamal’s seat but due to the on-going not-so-cordial situation with the PPP, the MQM will wait till it’s sure of getting someone in the Senate safely,” said the source.

Mustafa Kamal’s predicament within the MQM will come as a shock to many diehard activists who looked up to this rising star’s dedication and took inspiration from his enthusiasm. The MQM leader Altaf Husssain had held Kamal in so much esteem that he presented the former Karachi mayor as a success story in how he has helped produce the middle-class urban leaders in a country dominated either by the feudal or the filthy rich.

Kamal was in London in June this year to attend party meetings but left Pakistan soon after going back to Karachi and has been rarely seen in public. The Asian Echo is aware that Mustafa Kamal has recently spent time at his in-laws in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. He took his wife for medical check-up to America but has been mostly holed up in Dubai or California.

It has been learnt that the MQM approached Kamal with an offer to return to Pakistan to be part of the local bodies election campaign but the former Karachi Mayor is defiant to such an extent that he is no more answering telephone calls or replying emails of his party and friends. Kamal has not answered any calls or emails in over two months and he is no more answering calls of his partymen – his former colleagues.

Kamal started his political career with the MQM when a bloody military operation against the party was at its peak and Kamal worked as an operator at an under-siege Nine Zero in conditions that were far from ideal. His dedication caught the attention of Altaf Hussain and since then there has been no looking back for the smooth-talking politician but then the infighting at the Nine Zero not only got Mustafa kamal embroiled but also several other diehard activists.

Following that experience and the change in guard of the party machine at all levels – which saw the party in Pakistan being led by Khalid Maqbool Sididqui and former Haqqiqi leader Amir Khan – the rift within the party ranks has only deepened. Several veteran leaders complain that the party has been handed over to “those who backstabbed the party in difficult times, were part of the murderous campaign against the party, ran away from Pakistan, left the workers in lurch and conspired against the leadership”.

One senior leader Qaimkhani, said the source, has been honest in airing his views about the direction of the party but the expression of dissent against the new party leadership has not been liked.

“Qaimkhani has left Karachi and lives in another country these days, it’s not Dubai,” said the source. During military operation against the MQM, Anis Qaimkhani suffered torture and went to jail but refused to compromise, unlike many leaders who cut deals with the army against their own comrades. Those who know Qaimkhani within the party are aware that he has worked round the clock at the Nine Zero almost all his life.

Former Shipping Minister Babr Ghauri was asked about Mustafa Kamal’s differences with the party, he said there were no differences but said that Kamal had right to “leave” MQM if he wishes so.

“People have right to join and leave parties. If someone gets busy and leaves party that’s fine. People join parties, do their job and leave when they want to,” Ghauri told.

**********************************************************************

You know why they fled right? If not I will tell you. MQM is a party which has a fully functioning militant wing. They would have sent the target killers after them.

MQM confirms Mustafa Kamal was asked to quit Senate

KARACHI, Dec 1: The unexplained absence of Syed Mustafa Kamal from the country and the MQM headquarters in Karachi has prompted his party to ask him to quit his Senate seat, it emerged here on Sunday.

The former Karachi nazim, who got elected to the upper house of parliament in 2011, left the country in mid-August this year. His whereabouts have since been unknown and he remained in touch with some senior MQM leaders through internet/email. It is learnt that he did not call even Altaf Hussain over the last three months.

Sources told Dawn that in one of the email messages he had sent to some leaders of the party, he informed them that he was out of the country because of some problems pertaining to his family life and involving his foreign wife. Therefore, he was unable to say anything about his return.

The sources said that Altaf Hussain was worried about his continued absence particularly because of the upcoming local government elections. They added that at a meeting of the party’s coordination committee in early November he severely criticised senior MQM leader Anis Kaimkhani who he believed was in touch with the former nazim.

Mr Kamal and Mr Kaimkhani are known to be close to each other.

According to the sources, Mr Kaimkhani told Mr Hussain that he had not been in touch with Mr Kamal and even if he was he could not persuade him to return. Mr Hussain asked the coordination committee to send an email to Mr Kamal asking him to quit his Senate seat since his membership had been suspended for not filing the statement of assets and the MQM might lose one vote in the upper house during voting on a bill.

“Mustafa Kamal took only 15 minutes to email his resignation,” said a senior MQM leader, requesting anonymity.

He said that the MQM decided not to send his resignation to the Senate secretariat since the party would not be in a position to win the seat again in the event of by-election. “We do not have a majority in the Sindh Assembly and without PPP support we cannot win the seat.”

A dejected Kaimkhani also left the country the day after the meeting. “He switched off all his cellphones and he was not in contact with us anymore,” said the MQM leader.

Mr Kaimkhani, Mr Kamal and several others, including Dr Farooq Sattar, were removed from the party’s coordination committee in May this year. Later, Mr Hussain took them back in the party’s supreme decision-making forum as members.

On Sunday evening, the MQM coordination committee issued a statement confirming that Mr Kamal had sent his resignation, but that the party had so far not decided to accept it.

The statement said that Mr Kamal had gone abroad because of ‘personal and family problems’ and he had formally informed the party leadership before his departure.

It described all news reports about Senator Kamal having developed differences with the MQM as ‘baseless and fabricated’ and said that he had sent his resignation to the party leadership in the first week of November citing personal problems as the reason.

The MQM statement praised Mr Kamal and said he had done a tremendous job as Karachi’s nazim. “Everyone has appreciated his great work. The MQM also recognises and appreciates his work and pays great tribute to him.”

It recalled that after completing his tenure as city nazim in 2009, Mr Kamal had requested for leave from political work because he needed time to establish his business and the party granted him leave.

The statement said Mr Hussain, the coordination committee and all members of the MQM prayed to God for the solution of his personal problems so that he might again be able to actively participate in the party’s activities.

I am no mqm worker, or sympathiser, I just happen to know people who are associated with MQM. And they are unlike how people on this forum present them. So it is only naturally for me to comment.

On the topic of whether I was wrong or right, I didn't say anything wrong. The author of that particular article is from Bradford. Don't see what your problem is with that.

Now to break it to you, I personally don't care what Mqm or Mustafa kamal does. So good day to you, and enjoy your extra brownie points you got from watching me "duly embarrassed".

Senator Mustafa Kamal has moved abroad because of personal and domestic reasons: Rabta Committee

Posted on: 01/12/2013
The Central Co-ordination Committee (Rabita Committee) of the MQM has termed all such reports as baseless and fabricated that claim that there are differences between Senator Mustafa Kamal and the MQM.

In a press statement, the Central Co-ordination Committee said that the fact of the matter is that Syed Mustafa Kamal has moved abroad purely due to some personal and domestic reasons. Prior to leaving the country, the statement added, Senator Mustafa Kamal had formally informed the MQM’s leadership.

The statement further said that citing personal and family reasons, Syed Mustafa Kamal submitted his resignation from Senate seat to the party leadership in the first week of November. The party, however, has not made any decision on the matter so far.

Acknowledging tremendous services rendered by Syed Mustafa Kamal as City Nazim of Karachi, the statement said “everyone appreciates his great work. MQM recognizes and appreciates his work too and pays him great tributes.“

“After the end of his term of office as the City Nazim in 2009, Syed Mustafa Kamal had sought leave from the party's political activities because of some personal business. The party gladly granted the request back then as well,“ explained the statement of Co-ordination Committee.

The statement concluded that the party's founder and leader Mr. Altaf Hussain, Rabta Committee and all members of the party wish Syed Mustafa Kamal all the best and pray to Almighty for the positive resolution of his personal problems so that he may be able to resume his political activities from the party's platform and serve the nation.

Why Mustafa Kamal not denying the rumors that there is no rift b/w him and MQM? MQM can say all they want, what matter is Mustafa kamal is not saying anything which makes MQM suspicious
