Musharraf lands in Dubai

KARACHI – Former president Pervez Musharraf arrived in Dubai from Karachi on board a private airliner in Friday’s wee hours after his name was detached from exit control list (ECL) by the Supreme Court on Thursday.

People in large number arrived at Dubai airport to welcome him. His admirers and workers of the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) are being led by Dr Amjad. Earlier tonight, Musharraf departed from Karachi airport on board a private flight EK611 along with his doctor.

The flight was scheduled at 3:55am tonight. However, the flight was delayed by ten minutes and took off to Dubai at 4:10am. The former president clad in green t-shirt was driven to the airport under tight security by the Rangers personnel. He was in good mood and shook hands with people at the airport lounge. Yesterday, he said that he would definitely return to Pakistan as he dearly loved his homeland.

Earlier, Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan announced to remove his name from ECL, allowing him to travel abroad for medical treatment. “After receiving an application from Mushrraf’s counsel the Ministry of Interior has decided to strike Musharraf’s name off the ECL in the light of Supreme Court verdict,” Nisar said while addressing a press conference.

Musharraf’s latest coup

It has proved, in the end, to be a damp squib. What once began as a historic treason trial, either radically altering the civil-military imbalance or shaking the foundations of democracy in the country, is now all but over in name.

A sheepish Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan told the media last night that his government will allow retired Gen Pervez Musharraf to travel abroad on the latter’s firm assurance that he will return to Pakistan after several weeks. Not even the interior minister could pretend that Mr Musharraf’s return is likely.

Instead, Mr Khan tried to explain why his government’s hands were tied. Never mind that the Supreme Court itself had made clear that both the federal government and the special tribunal were well within their rights to prohibit Mr Musharraf from travelling abroad.

The government had tried to pass the buck to the Supreme Court and when the Supreme Court returned it firmly, the PML-N apparently had nothing left to offer. Surrender has come rather meekly.

There remains the possibility that Mr Musharraf may in fact return to Pakistan. But even if he does, the government has surely already signalled the end of its prosecution of the former dictator.

If the fate of Mr Musharraf seems relatively clear now, there are two other questions that remain to be answered. First, what was Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif thinking when he decided to pursue Mr Musharraf for treason?

From the very outset, there appeared to be no real strategy. In choosing to go after Mr Musharraf for the November 2007 emergency and not the 1999 coup, perhaps the prime minister was trying to make the overtly personal seem less so. In addition, there may have been legal advice that the original coup of Mr Musharraf was later sanctified by parliament and therefore more difficult to prosecute.

Yet, none of that could resolve the obvious political contradiction: if the first coup was not worthy of prosecution, then what did a short-lived imposition of emergency matter, especially if it led to the eventual ouster of Mr Musharraf and the reinstatement of Iftikhar Chaudhry?

Pakistan needs a reckoning with its military past. But justice must be done transparently, rationally and for the greater good. Prime Minister Sharif’s prosecution of Mr Musharraf always seemed more in line with persecution.

Second, what now of the civil-military imbalance? Increasingly, it appears that the prime minister has accepted the de facto normalisation of military control as the price for democratic continuity.

Gone with the wind, and please stay away you are not wanted here!

Wait, i thought according to the statements of PML-N Ministers Musharraf was going to be tried under Article 6. But here they send him out of the country under a Red Carpet. Ahsan Iqbal said that he will leave Politics if Musharraf is allowed to leave the country. Corruption aur U Turn ki bhi hud hoti hai

Sometimes i wonder, how does Nawaz Sharif and his cronies sleep at night knowing they are fooling the Nation and looting the country off its wealth. I mean how much more money do they all need, they are all billionaires. Khwaja Saad Rafique alone is worth billions of rupees, and he's a relatively Junior Minister.

Are you talking about the traitors who legalized the military coup?

Or the terrorist who hijacked a plane from the ground?

Enough of this so called conspiracies this has been said even by that time of his allies that it was all planned before all this .KArgil was the last stroke by the commando ,Grow up try to learn some thing from history other wise history wipes the faces of those which tend to ignore it .

Mushy was very naive to think that Nawaz and Co would let him participate in the 2013 general elections without a fight.

Nawaz takla tried to be smart, he put his fellow Butt as new COAS, most of the Generals were loyal to their real General not some sold out General with links to Nawaz Takla.

You raise a very important point .I would like to ask "most of the Generals were loyal to their real General not some sold out General with links to Nawaz Takla" you this phrase .Do our generals are loyal to each other or to constitution ? similarly those who have legitimise this are also the same as our commando .
