Mumbai girls' rap video on women's issues goes viral
Screengrab from YouTube video uploaded by BomBaebs.
Pankhuri Awasthi and Uppekha Jain of Mumbai are no household names yet, but they look all set to be one. Labelling themselves as 'Bombbaebs' the duo has posted a video #RapAgainstWomen on YouTube where they have highlighted various issues related to women in India.
The three-minute, seven second rap song has already gone viral and has got over 38,000 hits in just about 24 hours since it was uploaded.
The video starts with a caustic disclaimer that goes: "You don't have to read this. It's only a standard disclaimer. This video doesn't have any explicit content. It's just that the reality of women in India is Explicit."
The opening shot also defines masculine as "Men who are evolved enough to support the making of this video."
The song sung in English has no accompanying background music and has been recorded with the two girls standing in front of a wall and mouthing the lines. At various points in the video, the two budding singers are seen rapping even as they display placards that state #Rape, #Slut, #DomesticViolence and #Misogyny.
Throughout the song, Pankhuri and Uppekha have urged youngsters to move beyond merely going viral with the expression of anger on social media over such issues, and to do something concrete about the situation.
"Stop that tweet/ And actually get on your feet/ And help reform this mindset/ That for years has been preset," goes a line in the song.
They prefer not to introduce themselves as rap artists but as two girls trying to make a difference.
Meanwhile, interesting comments have started pouring in on the video. While most laud the effort, a few have criticised the song. One viewer, for instance, felt the song should have been sung in Hindi for a wider reach. Another viewer jokingly wondered if the BBC had funded the video.
