A large number of people dressed in Sindhi, Punjabi, Pakhtoon and Balochi costumes attended the Muttahida Qaumi Movements Qaumi Yakjehti Jalsa on Sunday. Jinnah Ground in Azizabad, the venue of the meeting, was filled with people and scores were seen in the adjacent streets and roads to listen to the speech MQM founder Altaf Hussain.
The participants, including women and children, hoisted national and the tri-colour MQM flags and raised slogans in favour of their leader. The public meeting was organised to show the world that people from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds were part of the MQM.
Some 16 non-Urdu speaking office-bearers and elected representatives of the MQM also spoke on the occasion in their own ethnic languages. The Deputy Convenor of the MQM Coordination Committee and Parliamentary Party Leader in the National Assembly, Dr Farooq Sattar, also addressed the meeting. Dr Sattar told the meeting that now no one could stop this revolution after seeing this mammoth crowd.
The public meeting was held amid strict security arrangements, and a heavy contingent of police and paramilitary Rangers was also present to avert any untoward incident. The programme ended at Maghrib.
Folk dances of the four provinces were performed on the stage before the speech of Altaf Hussain. The dances were performed by young girls and boys. The people also danced in jubilation.
The Jinnah Ground and its surrounding areas were fully illuminated, giving a colourful look. Journalists from the four provinces also attended the public meeting.
