PESHAWAR: Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai, a controversial cleric from Peshawar's historic Masjid Qasim Ali Khan, has once again divided the nation by declaring that the holy month of Ramzan will start on Monday – hours after state's central moon sighting committee declared that no crescent sighting was observed from any part of the country today.

According to Geo News, the self-imposed cleric said his decision was based on 22 evidences gathered by the mosque.

Earlier, Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Mufti Munibur Rehman said at a press conference that moon was not sighted and the first day of Ramzan will be on Tuesday, May 7.

The committee with Mufti Munib-ur-Rehman in the chair met in Karachi today for the sighting of the crescent of Ramzan-ul-Mubarak.

An official of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony earlier told that other members of the committee have attended Zonal and District Ruet-e-Hilal Committees at their respective places.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had predicted the possibility of Ramzan moon sighting on the evening of May 6 (Monday), however, it was not the case.

Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East were able to see the moon on May 5 and observe the first fast of the holy month on May 6.

South Asian neighbours Bangladesh, India and other countries in Asia and Africa will also sight the Ramzan moon on May 6 like Pakistan.

What is their problem? Did their moms not love them enough? Always "wanting to put their leg up" [Pakistani proverb literal translation]

Well if he wants to join everyone...I dont really see the problem ....in fact I discourage Pakistan from standing alone on Ramadan and Eid as every year!

Hi,

This pakistani Sqdrn Leader posted at Hill AFB next to Ogden UT---goes upto the metereolist at the base and asked him about the coming of the " new moon sighting" to check on the start of ramzan---.

The guy asks what are you trying achieve---the Sqdrn Ldr explains abut Ramzan that how it starts with sighting of a new moon---. The guy replied "oh I understand you are looking for the intensity of light of the moon "---. Then he prints him the dates for the new moon for the next 100 Years---.

This came out of the mouth of the sqdrn Ldr at his residence in utah---was it 1985 or 1986---.

somebody kill that son of a B!tch Popalzai ..:pissed: Bloody religious blackmailers :sniper:
Let us get rid of that red beard joker you have for the last 10 years, who has failed to see the crescent on every moon citing. He is abusing his authority on every occasion. It was so funny the last time, when he pull the telephone cords on live television, because info received by others in the room did not go through him, and all the shahadat were nullified. He is a joker.

Take this issue out of mullah's hands. I fully agree with what Fawad Chaudry said today about these mullahs and moon sighting.

Now science, which is a knowledge given to us by Allah, can predict birth of new moon. There is no need to see it. If you go by mullahs, they were against photograph too. They were against Pakistan as well.

Most of the Muslim world starts Ramzan on Monday. Pakistan is always on another planet. It always starts Ramzan day or two later.

Who says that the Eid must be a national event?

Don't work up your blood pressure without knowing details of the facts.

1. It is scientifically possible to know when the new moon will be, for years in advance. However at this point the new moon is not always visible on earth.

2. Most ulema (including Saudi) consider the sunnah sighting the moon, so we go through this moonsighting motion every year.

3. We live in a unique time where technology means every single Muslim can be told about global events in less than a minute. Historically this capability has not existed.

4. Due to this difference in tech availabile to us, ulema differ on whether we should go by actual sighting or scientific calculations, and also whether we should go by local sighting or global sighting.

5. We live in a unique time were we have no religious authority figure. In Islam mullah is not religious authority, Khalifah is. Due to a lack of Khalifah, nothing can be enforced globally. Political governments fear losing votes, kingdoms fear losing popularity or allies.

6. The Popalzai joke we see in Pakistan is unique. As well as all the technology we have discussed already, there is also scientific tech that can measure when we should be able to see the moon. This is available online at moonsighting.Com.
Popalzai always spots the moon when science reckons it should not be possible. Allah only knows if it is true, perhaps he has favourable conditions where he is - but political will could have shut down this joke years ago by sending red beard and Co to independently verify his sightings in front of media.

I would advice people chill. Ramadan is about forgiveness and reward, not about siyasat. When your masjid/govt tells you it is Ramadan, then it is Ramadan.

Alternatively start star gazing. The more of us do it independently, the less sway the bakras have.

We look at watches not at stars and shadows and sunset for prayer times. Why "ulemas" don't object to printing Sehar, Iftar and prayer timings in advance?
