Small and medium industries in Odisha can expect business deals with defence wings, including defence PSUs, ordnance factories and DRDO, which would procure 20% equipment from micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) following a policy decision.

“Local industries in Odisha has potential to cater to the defence sector for which they have to invest more in research and development,” said secretary (defence production) G C Pati here on Saturday. He participated at a vendor connect initiative taken by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at the ongoing industrial show ‘Enterprise Odisha’.

For the first time defence sector has participated in the exhibition to have intensive interaction with MSMEs for business development. “The procurement policy has mandated that all central government ministries and public sector units should source at least 20% of their total annual purchases from MSMEs. At present, ministry of defence(MoD) has been procuring about 40% defence equipment from Indian companies, public and private, and MSMEs and set a target of sourcing 70% of all defence equipment from Indian companies by 2020,” Pati said.

Citing an example of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Pati said, “While as many 76 vendors are supplying equipment to HAL only five are from Odisha. We want more and more local industries to participate and without creating a proper vendor base we cannot attain international competence,” Pati maintained.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday inaugurated the five-day industrial expo aimed at exploring business opportunities in the state and attracting new investments in various sectors.
