MQM starts poll campaign in Punjab, KPK today
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in a state of receiving repeated threats from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to boycott general polls, will start election campaign today (Sunday) from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa(KPK).
"Albeit Muttahida members have security threat but they will start election campaign from both provinces from today (Sunday), MQM Senior CEC Member Zahid Malik, talking to TheNation on Saturday. "Except some political parties, including PTI, JI, which are actively campaigning for elections while rest of the parties will yet to start their work due to security threats," he added.
Zahid Malik said that election campaign will start with enthusiasm and MQM chief will also telephonically address public meetings in some of the areas of these two provinces.
It is relevant to mention here that the MQM is among those parties, which received threats from the TTP and also asking the masses to avoid the party's rallies and public meetings.
Sources said that Muttahida in its election campaign would hold mainly 'indoor corner meetings' to avoid any unhappy incident.
The MQM leader said that the party had adopted its old strategy by fielding same number of candidates from Punjab and KPK despite the fact that situation would not much different from the result of 2008 elections.
In the background interviews and discussions, the MQM members said that this time election campaign was quite challenging for some parties that might affect election results. They said that almost all the members of MQM had been receiving threats to refrain from elections campaign.
The MQM had fielded 39 candidates from Punjab in the last elections but could not get through to even secure one seat in ay constituency of the Punjab, and same was the case in the KPK. The MQM has fielded two candidates, including Mirza Furqan Ali Mughal (PP-196) Multan- III and Iftikhar Ahmed Randhawa (NA-159), which are considered to bag large number of votes.
The Muttahida has already dropped its idea to hold nationwide referendum, asking people whether they wanted 'Quaid's Pakistan' or 'Taliban's Pakistan', which they postponed thrice sharing different reasons.
The MQM has divided Punjab into three zones, including centre, south and upper Punjab, for election campaign.
Although all these three zones are being headed by the local leadership but reportedly 'Nine-Zero' is still the epicentre of their real power.
Sources said that the MQM's senior leader might not attend even corner meetings of the party in these two provinces.
